Gloo’s Flourishing AI Initiative Reveals Bias in AI Models Against Christian Worldview

Gloo’s Flourishing AI project uncovers hidden biases in mainstream AI models, challenging their alignment with Christian values and human flourishing.

Artificial intelligence is reshaping how Americans engage with brands and each other, as new technologies fundamentally alter interactions across various domains. This ongoing transformation prompts new inquiries into the underlying frameworks guiding AI behaviors and responses.

In a recent discussion, Nick Skytland, a vice president at Gloo, a faith-oriented AI company, outlined the implications of artificial intelligence from a Christian perspective. Gloo has initiated its Flourishing AI project, designed to investigate how faith is expressed and interpreted in AI systems.

Skytland contends that mainstream AI models often revert to generic or secular guidance, even in response to faith-based prompts. “Gloo is a technology company that serves the faith ecosystem, and, back in July, we had released some research that we call Flourishing AI,” he stated. “And it’s just a benchmark that’s really grounded in seven dimensions of human flourishing based on a lot of research that’s out there.”

This initiative aims to create a comprehensive framework for evaluating AI alignment with values that promote human flourishing through a biblical lens. Skytland expressed optimism about the potential of AI but also raised concerns about inherent biases. “I think there’s something that we really do need to understand here — that AI does have a built-in bias,” he explained. “It does have a built-in, essentially hidden worldview, especially to the average user.”

The focus of Gloo’s research is to dissect these biases and explore their implications for individuals interacting with AI from a faith-based viewpoint. “This is something we’re really trying to understand with the flourishing AI benchmark, to expose the structural bias and then think about … what does that mean from a Christian worldview?” Skytland added.

AI’s functionality is contingent upon the data it receives during training, which can obscure its alignment with biblical values. “It’s … very great technology. But, as a Christian, we should ask the question: ‘Does it represent my values?’” Skytland noted. “And, if not … how do I approach that? What do I think about that?”

The issues become particularly pronounced when Christians seek AI insights on topics related to theology and interpersonal relationships. Skytland remarked, “Not surprisingly, faith and spirituality remain the most difficult dimension across all the frontier models that we’re seeing.” He emphasized that Gloo’s research goes beyond measurement, probing how faith influences broader human experiences.

Despite the challenges, Skytland remains hopeful, stating that “the models are getting better.” He encourages parents and educators to view these developments as significant opportunities for the Christian community. “This is a huge opportunity for Christians,” he added.

Gloo’s Flourishing AI Christian (FAI-C) Benchmark aims to evaluate whether AI systems support human flourishing through a distinctly Christian worldview. As the impact of AI continues to grow, understanding how these technologies align with various belief systems will be increasingly vital.
