The New Zealand government has launched a new initiative aimed at accelerating the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) within the public service, focusing on best practices for safe and responsible AI usage. The Public Service AI Work Programme outlines a comprehensive two-year strategy designed to enhance public services and modernize government operations for the country’s citizens.
This initiative includes the establishment of an AI marketplace, allowing government agencies to access various AI tools, as well as the creation of a public service AI hub and an AI innovation and accelerator lab. According to government officials, the programme is built on both local and international insights, aiming to develop an action plan that connects the efforts of different agencies with the necessary resources, guidance, and support needed to facilitate the rapid adoption of AI technology.
The government emphasized that the programme enhances existing mechanisms that have successfully increased AI usage to date, while also introducing new actions. All initiatives are designed to align with the AI Framework and Responsible AI Guidance tailored for the Public Service.
Divided into four key focus areas, the programme addresses barriers to AI adoption and implementation, featuring a total of 15 specific initiatives and deliverables aimed at fostering the uptake of AI in a safe and responsible manner. The core areas of focus include providing agencies with access to commonly used AI tools, ensuring the safe and responsible use of AI, improving customer experiences and partnerships, and developing a skilled AI workforce.
