The Home Depot has introduced its new Material List Builder AI tool, designed to assist professional renovators, remodelers, builders, and tradespeople in creating project material lists. Launched in late January, the tool allows users to input queries using natural language, integrate existing lists from various sources, and utilize built-in templates. Once a list is generated, the tool recommends products tailored to the users’ preferred pricing and inventory availability, enabling professionals to select and order items directly from the list. Additionally, users have the option to reorder items from previous lists, according to a company press release.
This latest initiative underscores The Home Depot’s commitment to enhancing technological offerings for its professional customers. The Material List Builder AI aims to help professionals manage their projects more efficiently, with a particular focus on saving time and adhering to budgets. “Pros often tell us that their most valuable resource for any job is time, so we’re focused on delivering solutions that empower Pros to work smarter and faster,” said Mike Rowe, executive vice president of Pro for The Home Depot. He emphasized that the AI tool generates comprehensive job lists much faster than traditional methods, allowing professionals to concentrate more on their customers and actual work.
The Material List Builder AI is available for free to members of Pro Xtra, as part of The Home Depot’s Project Planning tool. Introduced last September, the Project Planning tool provides a centralized digital hub for professional customers to track and manage their projects. In conjunction with this launch, the company also unveiled its Blueprint Takeoffs tool, which utilizes AI to produce more accurate and cost-effective material lists based on single-family project blueprints.
As part of its ongoing strategy to enhance service to the professional customer segment, The Home Depot appointed Michael Rowe as executive vice president of Pro in March. Rowe, who has been with the company for nearly 20 years, is part of the company’s larger effort to expand its professional ecosystem and increase market share. “We are uniquely positioned to win as we build out our Pro ecosystem, investing in capabilities to grow share of wallet with Pros no matter how they choose to shop with us,” said Ted Decker, CEO of The Home Depot, at the time of Rowe’s appointment.
In a significant move to bolster its capabilities, The Home Depot’s subsidiary SRS Distribution acquired specialty building products distributor GMS Inc. in a deal valued at $5.5 billion last June. This acquisition is part of a broader strategy, as The Home Depot purchased SRS Distribution, which serves sectors such as pool, roofing, and landscaping contractors, for approximately $18.3 billion in 2024. The company’s focus on enhancing its technology offerings and expanding its professional customer base reflects its commitment to staying competitive in the evolving home improvement market.
As the demand for efficiency and accuracy in project management continues to rise, tools like the Material List Builder AI are likely to play a crucial role in shaping the future of professional services within the home improvement sector. The integration of AI technology into operational workflows not only enhances productivity but also supports professionals in delivering quality results within tight deadlines.
