NHS Expands Oracle’s AI Note-Taking Tool to Over 300 Hospitals, Boosting Efficiency

Hospitals across the UK are increasingly adopting an artificial intelligence system designed to alleviate administrative burdens on healthcare staff. Oracle Health’s Clinical Note AI, which listens to consultations and generates draft clinical notes in real time, aims to enhance efficiency within medical settings. Launched in the United States last year, the technology is now accessible to all healthcare organizations in the UK and is currently being utilized in over 300 organizations.

The AI system utilizes ambient voice recognition to capture real-time conversations between clinicians and patients, automatically producing structured notes that significantly reduce the time spent on documentation. Early adopters of the system in the UK include Barts Health NHS Trust, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, and Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, which have begun expanding their use of the technology following successful pilot phases.

Robin Kearney, a consultant in acute medicine at Milton Keynes University Hospital, highlighted the transformative impact of the tool on his work. “It’s improved the accuracy of my notes and given me a lot of time back,” Kearney stated, noting that he is now able to complete patient letters before individuals have even left the department. This shift not only streamlines the workflow for clinicians but also has the potential to enhance patient care by ensuring timely and accurate documentation.

The rollout of Oracle’s Clinical Note AI in the UK is part of a broader commitment by the company to invest $5 billion (£3.7 billion) over the next five years. This investment will focus on expanding its cloud infrastructure and services to meet the growing demand within the UK market. The move reflects an escalating interest in utilizing advanced technology to improve healthcare delivery and reduce administrative workloads.

As healthcare systems globally grapple with the dual challenges of increasing patient loads and administrative overhead, AI technologies like Oracle’s Clinical Note AI are becoming increasingly vital.
