“The federal government has released its National AI Plan – a promising first step,” Dr. Chitizadeh stated. “It outlines investments and strategies to strengthen Australia’s position in artificial intelligence while aiming to ensure that all Australians benefit from its growth.” However, he cautioned that while the plan allocates some funding to address potential risks, this area is not prioritized, leaving a gap that many in the AI field seem to overlook.
“Many in the AI field follow the mindset of ‘build first, fix later’,” he explained. “Unfortunately, this does not work for AI.” He argues that AI systems are inherently more complex than traditional human-made designs, such as skyscrapers or aircraft engines. As a result, a lack of careful planning and robust safety measures in AI development could lead to significant challenges in ensuring safety after the fact.
