More than $1.2 million in funding for artificial intelligence startups will be awarded in Pittsburgh during NFL Draft week, with renowned entrepreneur Mark Cuban serving as a judge. The event, titled “Powering the Future of Sport: A Draft Week Showcase,” is being organized by Carnegie Mellon University in collaboration with the Pittsburgh Steelers and the AI Strike Team, and is set for April 22 at the university’s Robotics Innovation Center in Hazelwood Green.
The invitation-only showcase comes as the NFL Draft makes its way to the city, serving as a timely platform to demonstrate the intersection of sports and artificial intelligence. “With the NFL Draft coming to our city, it is a fitting moment to highlight how sport – through play, performance, engagement, and entertainment – has become a proving ground for the next era of AI,” said Farnam Jahanian, President of Carnegie Mellon University.
Cuban, well-known as an investor on ABC’s “Shark Tank” until May 2025, will be joined on the judging panel by Ed Stack, executive chairman of Dick’s Sporting Goods, and former Pittsburgh Steeler Will Allen. The judges will evaluate startups focusing on innovations that incorporate AI and robotics into athlete performance, training and safety, game and athlete analytics, fan engagement, venue and broadcast technology, as well as health and wellness.
The showcase includes a substantial prize package comprising $1 million in Amazon Web Services compute credits for promotional purposes and $275,000 in investment capital provided by Magarac Venture Partners, based in Bakery Square. These incentives are designed to stimulate growth and investment in the AI sector, particularly within the sports industry.
Companies from both the United States and abroad are eligible to participate, but those that commit to establishing an operational presence in Pennsylvania will receive preferential consideration. The application stipulates that this “substantial operating presence” may involve setting up a headquarters, opening a significant satellite office, or locating research and development, manufacturing, or deployment operations within the region.
“Artificial intelligence is transforming the NFL, with millions of data points each game reshaping how teams compete and how fans engage,” remarked Dan Rooney, vice president of strategy for the Steelers. This assertion underscores the crucial role that AI technologies play in modernizing sports management and fan interaction.
The event will also feature live demonstrations of cutting-edge AI technology, allowing attendees to experience firsthand the impact of AI on sports. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro is scheduled to deliver brief remarks, further highlighting the state’s commitment to fostering innovation in this rapidly evolving field.
This initiative not only underscores the growing importance of AI in competitive sports but also emphasizes Pittsburgh’s emerging role as a hub for technological innovation. As the convergence of sports and AI continues to evolve, the outcomes of this event could signal significant advancements in how teams utilize data and technology to enhance both performance and fan experiences.
As interest in AI-driven solutions increases across various sectors, events like the Draft Week Showcase present a unique opportunity for startups to gain traction and visibility in a competitive landscape. The initiative stands to benefit not only the participating companies but also the broader Pennsylvania economy as it seeks to attract talent and investment in the burgeoning field of artificial intelligence.
