Pentagon Integrates ChatGPT into GenAI.mil, Expanding Access to 3M Defense Personnel

The U.S. War Department has announced a partnership with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into its enterprise AI platform, GenAI.mil, significantly enhancing access to advanced large language models across the joint force. This initiative comes on the heels of GenAI.mil surpassing one million unique users just two months after its deployment, underscoring a growing institutional commitment to embedding generative AI within defense operations.

According to the Department, OpenAI’s models will now be available to all three million personnel within the Department through GenAI.mil, which is touted as a secure, mission-ready AI environment encompassing every branch of the military. This integration is framed as a vital step toward incorporating cutting-edge AI capabilities into daily operational workflows.

On LinkedIn, Katrina Mulligan, Head of National Security Partnerships at OpenAI for Government, expressed enthusiasm, stating: “ChatGPT is coming to our men and women in uniform! Today we announced that OpenAI is joining the Pentagon’s joint enterprise AI platform, GenAI.mil.” She emphasized the importance of using AI responsibly, noting, “We have long believed that democratic countries must understand how, with the proper safeguards, AI can help protect people, deter adversaries, and prevent future conflict.”

Mulligan further remarked, “We’re building technology that will change the world—and it will also introduce new risks that governments will have to manage.” She reiterated the responsibility to assist in managing these risks by making ChatGPT accessible within the defense workforce’s internal networks.

The Department reported that GenAI.mil has achieved over one million unique users since its launch and has maintained 100% uptime. Adoption of the platform spans all Military Services, reinforcing its status as the Department’s unified AI environment. The Department stated, “With adoption spanning every Military Service, GenAI has cemented itself as the Department’s unified environment for secure, mission-ready AI capabilities.”

The integration of ChatGPT is aimed at enhancing mission execution and readiness, providing reliable capabilities to the joint force. GenAI.mil represents a direct implementation of the Department’s AI Acceleration Strategy and aligns with the White House AI Action Plan. The overarching objective is to create an “AI-first enterprise,” supported by centralized infrastructure, training, and secure internal deployment.

As the platform expands, comprehensive training for all personnel will continue to ensure that AI tools are seamlessly incorporated into daily workflows, rather than being isolated to pilot projects. Mulligan noted, “Some of the best ideas about how AI can transform defense workflows will come from their exceptional workforce. Excited to see what they build!”

While the announcement emphasizes operational tempo and decision support, it also acknowledges the necessity of risk management. Mulligan reiterated that governments must navigate the new risks introduced by AI, highlighting the need for robust safeguards.

This partnership places OpenAI alongside other enterprise technology providers that are supporting federal AI deployments. The development underscores a broader trend of generative AI platforms transitioning from experimental tools to fundamental infrastructure within high-security environments. As public sector agencies increasingly adopt large language models, governance, training, and secure deployment issues will intersect with education and skills development, raising questions about AI literacy across the workforce.
