Kolkata: As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to reshape the digital landscape, its significance in cybersecurity has become increasingly paramount for ensuring safety, efficiency, and resilience. This notion took center stage during a recent session on “Artificial Intelligence in Cybersecurity” held at the Tangra institute, which aimed to enhance awareness and preparedness among the youth in the face of rising cyber threats. Approximately 200 students from classes XI and XII attended the event, which focused on how AI-driven systems are transforming cyber defense mechanisms and promoting safer digital practices.
Organized as part of The Times of India initiative “Leaders on Campus,” the program featured Abir Atarthy, director of Cyber Security Practices at TCG Digital Solutions Private Limited. Atarthy introduced students to the evolving landscape of AI-based cybersecurity, describing AI as a “digital body” that continuously learns and adapts. This contrasts sharply with traditional systems that primarily rely on fixed rules and signatures to detect threats.
During his presentation, Atarthy explained that conventional cybersecurity systems are predominantly signature-based, requiring known threat patterns to pinpoint malicious activities. However, with advancements in AI, detection systems have shifted toward behavior-based analysis, which facilitates real-time identification of anomalies and suspicious patterns. He highlighted that this transition significantly enhances the efficiency and speed of threat detection.
Atarthy elaborated on how AI systems quietly filter phishing emails and thwart fraudulent activities through rapid pattern recognition and high-speed data processing. One of the session’s standout features was a demonstration of a “live cyber threat model,” showcasing AI systems tracking cyber threats across countries in real time. This interactive element captivated students and illustrated the practical implications of AI in cybersecurity.
The discussion concluded with students expressing their concerns about emerging risks, particularly the vulnerability of AI systems to hacking. They also inquired about the evolving career landscape in AI-driven cybersecurity, indicating a growing recognition among young users of both the opportunities and uncertainties presented by AI technology.
As AI continues to permeate various sectors, its integration into cybersecurity mechanisms is expected to become increasingly sophisticated. Educational initiatives like the one held at St Sebastian’s School are vital in equipping the next generation with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate this evolving digital terrain. By fostering awareness and preparedness, such programs not only empower students but also contribute to building a more resilient digital future.
