As organizations increasingly integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into their cloud security strategies, a significant gap in AI security practices has emerged, prompting urgent questions among security teams. The rise of large language models (LLMs) and AI agents in cloud and hybrid environments has complicated the landscape, leaving many teams uncertain about how to protect their systems from new risks. The white paper “5 Steps to Close the AI Security Gap in Your Cloud Security Strategy” outlines the pressing need to adapt existing security frameworks to address these evolving challenges.

Security teams are grappling with fundamental questions regarding their AI assets, the adequacy of current cloud security tools, and which policies require updates. The rapid pace of change in AI technologies has created a disconnect between traditional security practices and the requirements for safeguarding new tools. This situation is not unprecedented; security teams have faced similar challenges with past technological shifts. However, the current generation of AI presents unique characteristics that significantly complicate traditional security frameworks.

The AI security gap presents itself in four primary ways. Firstly, many existing problems are exacerbated by the introduction of AI. Continuous evaluation of model outputs is also essential for preventing safety violations and data leaks.

Additionally, a significant skills gap exists within security teams, who are now expected to cultivate AI security expertise while simultaneously handling ongoing implementations. The fragmented nature of current tools, which often focus on isolated AI risks, further complicates the task. For example, monitoring model access with one tool, prompt security with another, and data lineage with yet another can result in critical interdependencies being overlooked.

Lastly, new compliance mandates are emerging that existing programs are ill-equipped to handle. For instance, the NIST AI 600-1 framework requires detailed documentation of training data sources, and the OWASP Top 10 for LLM Applications highlights AI-specific vulnerabilities that do not fit neatly into traditional vulnerability management frameworks. These compliance challenges create additional pressure on security teams already struggling to keep pace with rapid technological advancements.

The complexity increases when LLMs evolve from standalone components to AI agents. These agents can execute multi-step tasks autonomously, accessing cloud APIs and databases, which raises the security stakes. For example, a finance department deploying an AI agent to analyze financial reports introduces a nonhuman entity that requires extensive permissions across various systems. The non-deterministic behavior of these agents necessitates a fresh security approach, as they can become vectors for prompt injection attacks, potentially impacting interconnected systems.

The opacity of AI agents’ operations further complicates security management. With numerous “black-box” decisions occurring simultaneously, the breadth of permissions needed results in a significantly larger attack surface. This complexity underscores the necessity for an integrated security approach that does not treat AI security in isolation. For instance, a publicly accessible virtual machine may seem benign until it is revealed to be running an open-source model that utilizes sensitive code.

Effective security programs must layer business and application context on top of technical telemetry to understand AI’s role within an organization fully. Each use case for AI carries distinct risk profiles, necessitating tailored security controls. Rather than merely responding to isolated alerts, security teams must recognize the connections among model, data, and access risks, enabling them to prioritize actionable insights over myriad disconnected findings.

The integration of AI into cloud environments presents both familiar challenges and novel threats. While it amplifies existing security issues, it simultaneously introduces new attack vectors that traditional frameworks struggle to accommodate. Therefore, organizations must adopt a holistic approach that builds upon existing security foundations while addressing the specific risks associated with AI technologies. As the landscape continues to evolve, recognizing and closing the AI security gap will be crucial for maintaining robust cloud security.
