This heightened vulnerability arises as attackers increasingly target data, models, and AI-powered workflows, necessitating the implementation of comprehensive threat models and controls.

AI security differs significantly from traditional cybersecurity, as it demands the protection of diverse components such as training data, model artifacts, inference endpoints, and human-AI interactions. The expanded attack surface includes not just code and infrastructure, but also the integrity and provenance of training data, which can be compromised through poisoning. The growing complexity of AI systems requires both traditional security measures—like identity verification and logging—and AI-specific controls aimed at safeguarding model governance and prompt defenses.

Establishing an AI asset inventory is crucial for effective security programs, as these inventories help organizations track models, datasets, tools, endpoints, and third-party services. Adopting a NIST-style mapping approach can create a living, continuously updated inventory that enhances threat modeling and incident response capabilities. Furthermore, the AI supply chain has emerged as a significant business risk, where an attack on a single component can propagate through the entire system, amplifying impacts across various products and teams.

With AI agents evolving into autonomous actors within networks, they introduce a new layer of risk that resembles insider threats. Thus, organizations must account for the high-speed capabilities of these agents, implementing robust security measures like tool governance and real-time output monitoring.

Security Threat Models for AI

Two prominent resources for this purpose are the MITRE ATLAS framework, which outlines tactics and techniques for AI systems, and the OWASP LLM Top-10, which focuses on vulnerabilities in large language model applications. Warning signs include unexpected performance shifts or new edge-case failures clustered around specific triggers. Additionally, prompt injection remains a leading risk, particularly for applications utilizing large language models, as attackers can craft inputs that manipulate a model’s behavior or expose sensitive data.

The emergence of deepfake technology poses additional challenges, as it can undermine biometric and voice-based authentication, leading to successful social engineering attacks. Moreover, the use of unapproved AI tools by employees—termed “shadow AI”—can lead to accidental data leakage, further complicating security efforts.

To address these challenges, organizations must implement foundational controls tailored to AI security. Monitoring and logging must also be prioritized to facilitate rapid incident response and compliance audits.

Operationalizing AI security requires a Secure AI Development Lifecycle (SAIDL) to safeguard data, model development, and deployment. This involves ensuring data integrity and origin, scanning machine learning libraries for vulnerabilities, and implementing real-time output checks during deployment. By taking these steps, organizations can fortify their security posture against the evolving landscape of AI threats.

As AI continues to transform business landscapes, organizations that prioritize AI security will be better equipped to navigate the complexities of this technology. The commitment to high-visibility initiatives, such as OWASP LLM Top-10 mitigations and comprehensive monitoring, will be essential for minimizing incidents and scaling AI responsibly. In doing so, companies not only protect their assets but also position themselves for sustainable success in an AI-driven future.
