DMZ and PS43 Announce Second Siakam EdTech Cohort, Expanding Focus to AI Upskilling

NBA All-Star Pascal Siakam announces the second cohort of the Siakam EdTech Engine, expanding focus to AI upskilling amid a 14-15% youth unemployment crisis.

Toronto, ON, Nov. 26, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — NBA All-Star Pascal Siakam announced the continuation of the Siakam EdTech Engine with a second cohort, set to open applications in early 2026. This initiative builds upon the success of its inaugural cohort, which focused on closing gaps in the education system through innovative solutions. Launched this year in collaboration with Siakam’s foundation, PS43, and the DMZ, the program has already made significant strides with three pilot projects currently operational in schools.

At a recent event held at DMZ, Siakam gathered media, entrepreneurs, and education professionals to showcase the program’s impact. Founders from the first cohort, including James Hayes of Cyber Legends, Erica Derrickson of English Islands, and Lorraine Van Zon, principal of Bishop Macdonell Catholic School, presented early results from their pilot projects, highlighting how their tools are transforming student learning experiences.

The inaugural cohort concluded in July with a Demo Day, where startups had the opportunity to pitch their solutions to a panel of judges. In total, the program awarded $50,000 CAD in grant funding, alongside pilot project opportunities that enabled both Cyber Legends and English Islands to secure implementation in real-world classrooms.

Cyber Legends, a digital literacy platform designed to educate youth on safe online navigation, has initiated pilot projects with the Indiana Math and Science Academy and the Toronto Catholic District School Board. Meanwhile, English Islands, an AI-driven reading tutor that promotes independent learning, is also collaborating with the Indiana Math and Science Academy for its pilot.

The second cohort of the Siakam EdTech Engine aims to broaden its scope beyond traditional EdTech to include solutions focused on youth upskilling in artificial intelligence (AI). This shift comes in response to urgent needs in Canada, where youth unemployment surged to approximately 14-15 percent in mid-2025, and entry-level job opportunities have sharply declined. Many students, particularly those outside STEM disciplines, lack access to practical training and tools necessary to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving job market. The program seeks to support founders developing AI technologies that provide students with essential skills and clearer pathways to future employment.
