Ellucian Appoints Josh Rice as Chief Commercial Officer to Drive SaaS and AI Adoption

Ellucian appoints former Shopify executive Josh Rice as Chief Commercial Officer to enhance SaaS and AI adoption across 3,000 global institutions.

Ellucian has appointed Josh Rice as its new Chief Commercial Officer, entrusting the former Shopify executive with overseeing the company’s global commercial operations. This strategic move comes as Ellucian aims to broaden the adoption of its SaaS and AI-powered platform within higher education institutions. Rice will report directly to President and CEO Laura Ipsen and manage a cohesive commercial organization that encompasses revenue operations, solutions consulting, services, and customer success.

The appointment of Rice highlights Ellucian’s commitment to enhancing the customer experience during a pivotal time when educational institutions are increasingly migrating to cloud-based systems. As vendors vie to establish AI platforms as essential tools for campus operations, Ellucian seeks to position itself at the forefront of this transition.

Rice’s role will be crucial in elevating the adoption of Ellucian Student and its broader AI-driven offerings. His focus will be on streamlining the customer journey, which includes sales, implementation, and continuous support. “Josh brings a powerful combination of global experience, operational excellence, and a deep understanding of how to align teams around customer outcomes,” Ipsen noted. She emphasized that as institutions quicken their shift to SaaS models and reconsider how they serve students, Rice’s leadership will be instrumental in delivering value throughout the entire customer lifecycle.

The new commercial team under Rice will specifically concentrate on aiding institutions in effectively implementing and utilizing Ellucian’s platform. As demand surges for integrated systems that facilitate student services, administrative functions, and data-driven decision-making, the company’s focus is aligned with market needs.

Rice arrives at Ellucian from Shopify, where he served as vice president of global sales. In this capacity, he led customer success, solutions engineering, and sales functions. He brings with him a wealth of experience from previous leadership roles at Workday, Google, Microsoft, and Amazon Web Services, focusing on customer engineering, business development, and AI and machine learning initiatives. With this diverse background, Rice is expected to drive operational transformation within Ellucian.

The timing of Rice’s appointment is significant as higher education providers continue to explore and adopt SaaS systems. Institutions are increasingly looking into AI tools that enhance areas such as student engagement, enrollment management, and institutional analytics. As of now, Ellucian collaborates with approximately 3,000 institutions worldwide, positioning its platform around data integration and AI capabilities that span the student lifecycle, encompassing everything from recruitment and enrollment to alumni engagement.

With Rice at the helm of commercial operations, Ellucian appears poised to strengthen its market position amid a rapidly evolving landscape in higher education technology. As adoption of cloud-based systems accelerates, the effectiveness of Rice’s strategies will likely be pivotal in shaping how institutions leverage technology to improve educational outcomes.
