AI Expert Advocates for AI to Combat Misinformation and Deepfakes in Media

Veteran broadcaster Bisi Adanri calls for the proactive use of AI to combat misinformation and deepfakes, urging collaboration between journalists and tech firms to protect media integrity.

A veteran broadcaster, Mrs. Bisi Adanri, has called for the proactive deployment of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a vital defense mechanism against the growing threats of misinformation and deepfakes. Speaking at the 4th graduation ceremony of Crest Media Academy in Akure, Ondo State, Adanri emphasized the necessity of harnessing AI to enhance evidence-based reporting and ensure credible voices reach the public.

Adanri highlighted that the potential applications of AI extend beyond traditional newsrooms. She noted that students are increasingly struggling to discern credible sources amid a flood of AI-generated content, which threatens the foundation of an informed citizenry. This challenge, she remarked, necessitates a concerted effort in the media and education sectors to combat the ramifications of AI-driven misinformation.

“As a playwright and novelist, I know that every story carries a moral compass. The theatre teaches us that illusion can reveal truth, but deception must never masquerade as reality,” Adanri stated. She underscored the importance of credibility in journalism, stating that it is earned through consistency, accuracy, and accountability. “Education reminds us that knowledge is not merely information, but it is wisdom cultivated through discernment. These traditions must guide us as we confront AI-driven misinformation,” she added.

Adanri also urged for accountability from tech companies to label synthetic content clearly, and advocated for collaboration between journalists, educators, and technologists to develop effective safeguards. She called for investment in investigative reporting that pierces through the noise and adherence to editorial standards that resist the allure of clickbait. “Celebrate the role of journalists as guardians of democracy,” she emphasized.

The ceremony also featured remarks from Prince Ade Adekanmbi, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Cresthills Media, who encouraged the new graduates to uphold journalistic ethics and integrity. “We need journalists who will be able to uphold ethics and analyze policies and talk truth to power. We need journalists who will be at any point in time because they are the ones government policies affect the most,” Adekanmbi stated.

In addition, Adeolu Gboyega, Group Chief Operating Officer of Cresthills Media, alongside Temitope Dare, the pioneer Provost of Crest Media Academy, shared that over 300 students have been mentored and graduated from the academy since its inception in 2021. This milestone reflects the academy’s commitment to fostering a new generation of journalists equipped to tackle contemporary challenges in media.

As the media landscape continues to evolve, the integration of AI and ethical journalism practices will be crucial in addressing the challenges posed by misinformation. The call to action from Adanri and other industry leaders signals a collective recognition of the need for heightened vigilance and innovation in safeguarding the integrity of information dissemination.
