The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has launched a national training programme aimed at enhancing the capabilities of government officials in the responsible deployment and governance of artificial intelligence (AI). The initiative was unveiled on December 19, 2025, during the Conclave on Strengthening Human Capital for the AI Era, organized by IIT Madras’ Centre for Responsible AI at the Wadhwani School of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence.
In collaboration with Google and the Digital Futures Lab, this comprehensive capacity-building initiative addresses the growing need for AI literacy within the public sector. As AI technologies increasingly shape critical areas such as education, healthcare, service delivery, and digital governance, the programme aims to provide officials with the necessary technical, operational, and governance skills to effectively implement AI systems across government institutions.
The curriculum is designed to cover foundational AI technologies, procurement evaluation strategies, risk assessment methodologies, and governance protocols in line with India’s policy frameworks. Participants will engage in interactive workshops, case studies, and practical sessions to assess their departments’ AI readiness and formulate actionable roadmaps for AI-based solutions.
Professor B. Ravindran, Head of the Wadhwani School, emphasized that trustworthy AI adoption hinges on principles of trust, inclusion, and accountability. This initiative is seen as a precursor to the upcoming India AI Impact Summit 2026, which aims to position India as a leader in responsible AI adoption across the Global South while fostering safe, human-centered technology deployment.
The urgency for such educational programmes is underscored by the rapid advancement of AI technologies and their potential implications for governance and public sector management. As AI continues to evolve, the demand for ethical decision-making and effective implementation frameworks becomes increasingly critical.
Moreover, the initiative reflects a broader commitment by the Indian government to enhance digital literacy and technological governance among public officials. The integration of AI into governance models is expected to streamline processes and improve service delivery, making it essential for officials to understand both the capabilities and limitations of these technologies.
As part of the training, participants will also explore the ethical dimensions of AI, including bias mitigation and accountability in AI systems.
