India’s indigenous artificial intelligence models are “in good shape” and will be formally unveiled at the IndiaAI Impact Summit scheduled for February 19 in New Delhi, according to Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. This announcement comes as the government prepares to showcase AI models developed under the IndiaAI Mission, which has been instrumental in pushing forward the country’s AI capabilities.
Anticipation is building for the summit, which will feature Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several prominent figures from the global technology landscape, including Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani, Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran, Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani, and Bharti Enterprises founder Sunil Bharti Mittal. Around 14 heads of state are also expected to attend, reflecting the summit’s significance on the international stage.
Vaishnaw emphasized that the summit will mark the culmination of IndiaAI Mission 1.0, which aims to enhance the national AI framework. He noted that there are plans for additions to the common compute stack that supports domestic AI development. Furthermore, he highlighted that preparations are already underway for IndiaAI Mission 2.0, which is expected to be launched within the next five to six months, indicating a sustained commitment to advancing AI technology in India.
The minister also revealed that the government is evaluating new institutional frameworks for AI governance. This includes proposals for an AI Economic Council and an AI Governance Council, which were highlighted in the recent Economic Survey. These proposals are currently under review by the Principal Scientific Adviser’s office, demonstrating the administration’s proactive approach to establishing a robust governance structure for AI technologies.
In addition to the main summit activities, New Delhi will host the Global Partnership on AI (GPAI) Council meeting on February 20, as it prepares to pass the GPAI chair baton. This meeting underscores India’s growing role in the international AI landscape, as the country looks to deepen collaborations and partnerships in this critical field.
The developments leading up to the IndiaAI Impact Summit reflect a significant moment for India’s technological aspirations, aligning with global trends in AI and positioning the country as a prominent player in the artificial intelligence arena. As India seeks to bolster its AI capabilities, the outcomes of this summit could set important precedents for future policies and initiatives in the sector.
