Frontiers has introduced new guidance on the integration of artificial intelligence into the research publishing process, targeting researchers, editors, and peer reviewers. This initiative aims to transcend the traditional binary of “allowed / not allowed” policies, reflecting the growing prevalence of AI tools in scholarly workflows.
The framework outlines practical approaches for implementing AI throughout the publication lifecycle, emphasizing responsible adoption and the necessity for policy to adapt alongside evolving practices. With AI already significantly embedded in research and peer review activities, Frontiers argues that structured and transparent governance is increasingly essential.
Kamila Markram, Co-founder and CEO of Frontiers, emphasized the organization’s commitment to integrating AI in a manner that aligns with community needs. “Frontiers was born digital and has always been an AI-native organisation, committed to developing and delivering state-of-the-art AI tools and technology that aid researchers at every stage of the publishing process and safeguard quality and integrity in peer review,” she stated. Markram added that the newly launched guidelines are a concrete step toward evolving a practical framework that engages researchers effectively.
Supporting this initiative, Frontiers released findings from a recent whitepaper indicating that a majority of peer reviewers are utilizing AI tools. The organization advocates for policy frameworks that reflect this widespread adoption rather than imposing restrictive controls that could hinder innovation.
Elena Vicario, Director of Research Integrity at Frontiers, reinforced the potential of AI to enhance scientific discovery. “AI use in research and science publishing is already here and provides an unparalleled opportunity to advance scientific discovery and innovation. The publishing industry should not present roadblocks to AI adoption but roadmaps that provide confidence and protect integrity for researchers, editors, and reviewers alike,” she noted. This perspective underpins the purpose of the new guidance, which aims to clarify the use of AI in the sector.
The framework introduces guidelines for every role within the publishing process, promoting accountable, transparent, and risk-aware utilization of AI. Central to the guidance is the “BE WISE” framework, which establishes six key principles: transparency, accountability, appropriate tool use, user awareness, integrity safeguards, and equity.
Moreover, the guidance delineates “permission-to-proceed” checkpoints that are meant to be applied at critical stages of AI use. These checkpoints encompass considerations related to impact and oversight, governance, permitted inputs, and verification. Should these conditions not be fulfilled, the recommendations suggest limiting AI use to low-impact tasks or foregoing it altogether.
In addition to these principles, Frontiers has provided practical tools such as prompts, templates, audit logs, and workflow examples aimed at facilitating the implementation of AI in daily publishing activities. The publisher envisions the guidance as a “living framework” that will evolve based on community feedback, inviting researchers, publishers, and other stakeholders to contribute to future policy developments as AI adoption widens across scholarly communication.
This proactive stance reflects an industry-wide recognition of the transformative potential of AI in research publishing. By providing clear guidelines, Frontiers aims not only to enhance the integrity of the publishing process but also to foster an environment where innovation can thrive, ensuring that all participants in the scholarly ecosystem can effectively navigate the integration of AI into their work.
