The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has entered into collaboration agreements with 24 organizations, including major technology firms such as Accenture, Amazon Web Services, Google, IBM, Microsoft, and NVIDIA, to propel the Genesis Mission. This initiative is a national effort aimed at leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to expedite discovery science and enhance national security. Announced recently, the initiative builds on President Trump’s Executive Order and America’s AI Action Plan, focusing on establishing a scalable national infrastructure for scientific innovation.
The Genesis Mission is designed to substantially boost the productivity of American scientists and researchers by automating experiment design, accelerating simulations, and generating predictive models. While the mission centers on energy innovation, it also seeks breakthroughs in areas such as manufacturing and drug discovery. Collaborations were formalized through memorandums of understanding (MOUs), stemming from responses to DOE Requests for Information (RFIs) or ongoing projects with National Laboratories. All products resulting from these partnerships will be architecture-agnostic, ensuring broad applicability within the U.S. research and development ecosystem.
Organizations participating in the Genesis Mission include not only technology giants like AMD and OpenAI, but also research-focused entities such as Cerebras and xAI. Notably absent from the list are pure-play quantum computing companies, raising questions about the mission’s scope concerning cutting-edge quantum technologies.
As part of ongoing efforts to expand collaboration, the DOE has opened two RFIs. The “Partnerships for Transformational Artificial Intelligence Models” RFI will remain open until January 14, 2026, while the “Transformational AI Capabilities for National Security” RFI will close on January 23, 2026.
