Harrisburg Launches AI-Powered Parking System Across 12 City Garages

Park Harrisburg partners with Metropolis to launch an AI-driven parking system in 12 garages, enhancing convenience for over 750,000 users while eliminating physical tickets.

Park Harrisburg is set to deploy an AI-powered parking system across all 12 city-owned parking garages, marking the capital’s first significant public infrastructure upgrade in over a decade. This rollout aims to create a “seamless” experience for drivers, allowing for smooth entry and exit without the need for physical tickets or kiosks.

The partnership involves Metropolis, a company specializing in AI technology that utilizes advanced camera systems to recognize vehicles and automatically charge parking fees. Installation is already in progress across the facilities and is expected to continue through December.

The new system will employ computer vision and license plate recognition to link vehicles with their payment accounts, which must have a credit card on file. This innovation is designed to eliminate the need for cash transactions or stopping at kiosks, streamlining the parking process for both monthly and daily users.

According to a press release, over 750,000 existing Metropolis members in Pennsylvania and the Maryland area are likely to experience immediate access to the upgraded system once it is launched.

John Gass, a spokesperson for Park Harrisburg, remarked, “This upgrade represents a meaningful step forward for Park Harrisburg. We’re bringing our parking infrastructure into the future, making it more convenient for parkers.”

To assist users in transitioning to the new system, QR code signage will be installed throughout all parking facilities. This will allow drivers to quickly sign up using their phone number, vehicle information, and credit card details. On-site staff will also be available during peak hours to offer help, and there will be 24/7 support via a dedicated phone line posted at all exits.

As part of the transition, the platform will facilitate easier management of parking validation and programs in collaboration with local businesses. While the existing gate infrastructure will remain, users will still be required to make payments upon exit, although a nominal transaction fee will be added as part of the new service.

“At Metropolis, we’re focused on removing everyday friction for drivers,” said Alex Israel, CEO and co-founder of the company. “This deployment with Park Harrisburg reflects our broader mission to build an intelligent layer across the physical world—starting with parking and extending into every aspect of the urban experience.”

Metropolis claims to operate the largest parking network in the U.S., boasting over 4,200 locations across 40 countries. This project in Harrisburg is a significant step towards modernizing urban infrastructure, potentially setting a precedent for similar initiatives in other cities.
