Swiss watchmaker Swatch has unveiled a groundbreaking design tool named AI-DADA, powered by OpenAI, enabling customers to create entirely unique watches through simple text prompts. Set to launch in Switzerland tomorrow, this innovative platform promises to generate one-of-a-kind designs in under two minutes, with a price tag of approximately 170 Swiss francs (about $210)—more than double the cost of standard models. This service marks a significant shift in an industry traditionally rooted in mass production, aiming to address the long-standing challenge of personalizing consumer goods.

CEO Nick Hayek Jr. highlighted the ambitions behind AI-DADA, which seeks to merge artificial intelligence with customized manufacturing. During the launch event, Hayek playfully experimented with the system, entering prompts like “Sex, drugs, and rock’n’roll,” though the tool gracefully declined to generate designs based on those requests. Instead, it focuses on transforming user input into artistic watch designs, leveraging Swatch’s extensive art and cultural archive spanning over 40 years.

AI-DADA evolves from Swatch’s previous ‘Swatch x You’ platform, which offered limited customization options by allowing users to rotate preset designs. In contrast, AI-DADA starts with a blank canvas, allowing for a fully personalized experience. The completed watches are marked with a unique “1/1” notation on their case backs to signify their exclusivity in a market saturated with identical products.

How AI-DADA Works

The process is straightforward: customers log into their Swatch accounts and can submit up to three prompts per day, ensuring that every design attempt feels special. The AI generates a drawing based primarily on Swatch’s extensive catalog, only turning to OpenAI’s broader training data when users request designs outside the curated selections. Roberto Amico, Swatch Group’s global head of digital and ecommerce, emphasized that while the company worked with OpenAI to enhance the tool’s flexibility, safeguards remain in place to prevent the generation of offensive content or trademark violations.

The pricing reflects a premium for personalization, with AI-generated New Gent models priced at 170 Swiss francs compared to around 95 Swiss francs for traditional versions. While this is still relatively affordable in luxury watch terms, it represents a notable markup for what fundamentally is a printed design on plastic.

Swatch promises quick manufacturing and delivery, with global shipping expected within 2-5 days once the service extends beyond Switzerland. Importantly, while the company retains ownership of all generated designs and customer data, it assures users that their information will be anonymized.

Limitations and Consumer Expectations

However, there is a catch that may disappoint some watch enthusiasts: AI-DADA currently allows customization solely for the basic New Gent model. This limitation comes at a time when there is significant demand for bespoke designs, particularly for Swatch’s popular MoonSwatch collection—a collaboration with Omega that has seen tremendous success in the watch industry.

As Swatch embarks on this innovative journey, the company is betting on AI to revolutionize the way consumers engage with their products. By merging cutting-edge technology with traditional craftsmanship, Swatch aims to carve out a niche within the competitive landscape of personalized consumer goods, potentially setting a new standard for customization in the watch industry.
