ByteDance’s Doubao AI Phone Receives Biweekly Updates Amid Ongoing Privacy Concerns

ByteDance’s Doubao AI phone, priced at approximately $497, faces soaring demand with biweekly updates, despite ongoing privacy concerns and limited inventory.

ByteDance‘s Doubao AI phone, a limited-run handset produced in collaboration with ZTE‘s Nubia brand, has garnered substantial consumer interest since its launch in early December. Despite concerns regarding privacy and data security, the device has continued to receive regular software updates, indicating an active commitment to enhancing its functionality.

On Tuesday, ZTE’s online store briefly reopened applications for an “F code,” or “friend code,” which provides priority access to purchase the device priced at 3,499 yuan (approximately US$497). This move reflects the ongoing high demand for the Doubao, which ByteDance acknowledged was “completely unable to meet” with its current inventory.

Marketed as a “technology preview edition,” the Doubao AI phone includes a disclaimer emphasizing its intended use for industry users seeking hands-on experience rather than for the general consumer market. The application form for potential buyers noted that there would be a limited production run with no plans to expand manufacturing, prioritizing applicants who had previously expressed interest but failed to obtain a device.

The Doubao AI phone is designed to process natural-language commands, enabling it to perform tasks on behalf of users. In an effort to enhance user experience, the development team has been actively releasing updates to the device’s beta version. A publicly available update log indicated that software releases now occur approximately every two weeks. Recent updates included modifications to the user interface and improvements to the device’s Doubao assistant, specifically regarding its “intent recognition” capabilities, which help the system discern user intentions more effectively.

The continuous software enhancements and high demand for the Doubao AI phone underscore a burgeoning interest in AI-integrated devices, particularly within the smartphone market. As consumers increasingly seek technology that can seamlessly integrate into their daily lives, the capabilities of AI assistants will likely become a significant aspect of future device development.

As ByteDance navigates the complexities of consumer privacy concerns and the competitive landscape of smart technology, the Doubao AI phone may serve as a pivotal test case for the broader adoption of AI-driven features in mobile devices. The company’s strategy and consumer response could influence how similar products are developed and marketed in the future.
