Adobe Partners with Runway to Integrate Gen-4.5 AI Video in Firefly, Enhancing Creative Tools

Adobe integrates Runway’s Gen-4.5 AI video model into Firefly, boosting creative capabilities and offering unlimited access to users until January 15, 2026

Adobe Systems has announced a multi-year partnership with Runway to integrate the latter’s Gen-4.5 AI video generation model directly into its Firefly suite, significantly enhancing Adobe’s creative ecosystem. The collaboration, revealed in December 2025, designates Adobe as Runway’s preferred API creativity partner, providing its users with early access to Runway’s cutting-edge models. This partnership comes amid a growing trend of strategic alliances in the AI sector as companies seek to bolster their technological capabilities.

The integration introduces Runway’s generative video technology into Adobe’s popular applications such as Premiere Pro and After Effects. Ely Greenfield, Adobe’s Chief Technology Officer, remarked that “Runway’s generative video innovation combined with Adobe’s trusted pro workflows will help creators and brands expand their creative potential and meet the growing demands of modern content and media production.” This sentiment captures the essence of the partnership, which aims to empower users in an increasingly content-driven landscape.

Alongside the partnership, Adobe has rolled out significant updates to Firefly’s video capabilities. A key feature is the Prompt To Edit function, which allows users to modify existing clips using natural language commands—such as “remove the person on the left side” or “change the sky to overcast”—without the need to regenerate entire videos. This innovation, powered by Runway’s Aleph model, streamlines the editing process, representing a shift in how video content can be manipulated in real-time.

Moreover, Adobe has introduced camera motion controls, enabling users to upload a start frame and a reference video to generate both scenes and cinematic movements. This feature promises to save hours of trial and error for professional creators. In a further enhancement, third-party models like Black Forest Labs’ FLUX.2 and Topaz Astra have been incorporated into the Firefly platform. FLUX.2 promises photorealistic detail and advanced text rendering, while Topaz Astra elevates low-resolution clips to 1080p or 4K quality, catering to the growing demand for high-definition content.

The public beta of Firefly’s video editor has also been launched as a browser-based tool, allowing for comprehensive video generation and editing. This editor supports multitrack timelines and music integration, functioning on any device without requiring users to download full applications, thus enhancing accessibility for creators.

Adobe has announced a limited-time promotion allowing users unlimited access to all Firefly models until January 15, 2026. Subscribers to Firefly Pro, Firefly Premium, as well as those with 7,000-credit and 50,000-credit plans, will benefit from unlimited image and video generations across both Adobe’s and third-party models. This offer is part of Adobe’s strategy to attract more users to its platform amid heightened competition in the AI video generation industry.

With this partnership, Adobe positions itself against rivals like OpenAI’s Sora in the AI video generation landscape. Cristóbal Valenzuela, CEO of Runway, stated that “This partnership puts our latest generative video technology in front of more storytellers, inside Adobe’s creative tools that are already the industry standard for many creators around the world.” This collaboration underscores a broader trend where established tech companies are integrating advanced AI capabilities to enhance creative tools.

Adobe and Runway are also set to collaborate directly with filmmakers, studios, agencies, and streaming platforms to introduce new video features within Adobe’s applications. However, the integration raises questions about the role of AI in creative production and its potential impact on traditional workflows in film, television, and advertising.

Firefly users will have the flexibility to mix different AI models according to their project needs, utilizing both Adobe’s and Runway’s technologies without their content being used to train AI systems. The unveiling of the video editor in October 2025 initially occurred in a private beta before this public rollout, indicating Adobe’s commitment to refining its offerings based on user feedback. This partnership reflects an ongoing trend among major corporations to forge strategic alliances in the AI space, similar to other recent collaborations, such as Allianz’s global partnership with Anthropic.
