AI Companion App Revenue Surges 30% in Q1 2026; Zeta Leads Global Growth Rankings

AI companion app revenue surged 30% in Q1 2026, led by Zeta’s record growth as it becomes the top Korean app in the global market.

The market for AI companion apps is experiencing rapid growth, with a notable surge in revenue driven primarily by Korean applications. A report from the mobile data analytics firm Sensor Tower, released on Tuesday, indicated that global in-app purchase revenue for these apps increased by approximately 30 percent in the first quarter of 2026 compared to the previous quarter, marking the highest growth rate among generative AI subcategories, including AI assistants and content creation tools.

Among the leaders in this market is Zeta, an AI character chat app launched in April 2024 by Scatter Lab, renowned for its AI chatbot, Lee Luda. Zeta not only ranked first in quarter-on-quarter revenue growth but also achieved the highest year-on-year growth, solidifying its status as the only Korean app to make it into the global top 10. Other notable Korean apps include Uif, which ranked sixth, and Melting in eighth, collectively representing three of the top 10 positions.

In terms of absolute revenue, U.S. applications PolyBuzz and Chai maintained their dominance, with Zeta positioned third globally and Lovey Dovey seventh. Zeta’s impressive growth can be attributed to its strategic expansion into the Japanese market, where it saw monthly downloads peak at around 400,000 as of March 2026, the highest level in nearly 28 months since its launch. By this time, Japan had surpassed South Korea to become Zeta’s largest market, followed by the United States and South Korea.

Zeta has implemented targeted marketing strategies that have significantly enhanced its visibility. The app ranked first among generative AI applications in terms of TikTok advertising exposure in the first quarter. In the United States, organic user inflows also surged as a result of expanded advertising focused on mobile app channels, further contributing to its growth trajectory.

A multi-platform approach has supported Zeta’s escalating user engagement. The app’s web traffic has consistently risen, with monthly visitors surpassing one million by the end of 2025. In the first quarter of 2026 alone, app-only users increased by 81 percent year-over-year, while web-only users saw an 87 percent rise. Users engaging with both app and web platforms surged by 157 percent, representing the fastest growth in engagement.

Sensor Tower highlighted that despite a revenue structure heavily influenced by the U.S. market, Korean apps are exhibiting remarkable growth within the AI companion sector. The report suggested that the potential for these apps to expand globally could significantly impact the overall landscape of the market.

As demand for emotionally interactive AI companions escalates, the focus on innovative marketing and strategic expansion appears crucial for companies looking to capitalize on this burgeoning sector. Zeta’s success serves as a case study in leveraging market-specific strategies and multi-platform engagement to thrive in the competitive landscape of generative AI applications.
