Amazon Launches AI Assistant in Kindle App to Answer Character and Plot Questions

Amazon’s Kindle app now features “Ask This Book,” an AI assistant that provides instant, spoiler-free answers to readers’ questions about their current books.

Amazon has introduced a new feature called “Ask This Book” in its Kindle app for iOS, which employs artificial intelligence to answer readers’ questions about the content of the books they are currently reading. This feature, available exclusively in the United States, serves as an “expert reading assistant” aimed at enhancing the reading experience.

With “Ask This Book,” users can highlight any passage in their text and inquire about plot details, character relationships, and thematic elements. The AI-generated responses are designed to be spoiler-free, providing information only up to the user’s current reading position. According to Amazon, the feature is available in books by default, and authors cannot opt out of its inclusion.

“The feature uses technology, including AI, to provide instant, spoiler-free answers to customers’ questions about what they’re reading,” Amazon informed PubLunch. “Ask This Book provides short answers based on factual information about the book, which are accessible only to readers who have purchased or borrowed the book and are non-shareable and non-copyable.”

To utilize the feature, readers need to install the latest update of the Kindle app. They can find “Ask This Book” in the in-book menu or highlight a passage and tap “Ask” from the contextual pop-up menu. Currently, the feature is limited to English-language books, with plans for future expansions to Kindle devices and Android operating systems scheduled for next year.

This move represents Amazon’s ongoing investment in enhancing the user experience through technology. The integration of AI into reading not only caters to a growing audience of digital readers but also aligns with broader trends in the publishing industry that increasingly leverage technology to engage consumers.

As the digital reading landscape evolves, tools like “Ask This Book” could reshape how users interact with literature. By offering immediate access to information and analysis, the feature may encourage deeper engagement with texts, potentially changing traditional reading habits. Given the rising interest in AI applications across various sectors, Amazon’s latest feature could herald further innovations in how readers connect with books.
