Amazon has unveiled a completely reimagined lineup of its digital writing device, introducing the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft, marking the debut of its first-ever colour e-reader equipped with an AI-powered notebook. Alongside the Colorsoft, the company also launched next-generation versions of the standard Kindle Scribe. During the announcement, Panos Panay, Senior Vice President of Devices and Services, emphasized a strategic shift towards integrating productivity tools and advanced artificial intelligence into the Kindle experience. “The first-ever Kindle Scribe Colorsoft is out now. Lightning fast, paper-like color, smarter AI. Big step forward,” he stated in a post on X.
Amazon’s CEO, Andy Jassy, reiterated the significance of the launch, saying, “Our first ever colour Kindle Scribe is here, and customers are going to really like it.” He noted that the device has been completely redesigned from the ground up, highlighting its ultra-thin profile, the natural feel of writing and sketching, and near-instantaneous page transitions. The integrated AI, powered by Amazon’s Nova models, is designed to assist users in finding notes, creating summaries, and engaging in queries about their notes. “I think this is gonna change how folks work,” Jassy added.
Both the Kindle Scribe and the new Kindle Scribe Colorsoft are available for purchase now. The Kindle Scribe starts at $499.99, while the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft is priced at $629.99. Additionally, a version of the Kindle Scribe without front lighting will be introduced in 2026, starting at $429.99. The full lineup is expected to be available in the UK and Germany next year.
The Kindle Scribe Colorsoft promises a fluid colour writing experience. To enhance visual comfort, Amazon employs a custom-built Colorsoft display technology, incorporating a colour filter and light guide with nitride LEDs. This design enhances colour fidelity while avoiding the harshness often associated with traditional LCD displays. A new rendering engine supports the colour display, allowing for fast and natural writing and drawing. Users can choose from ten pen colours and five highlighter colours for annotating text.
Featuring an 11-inch glare-free display that mimics the proportions of a standard sheet of paper, the device utilizes texture-molded glass to improve friction for a more natural writing feel. Amazon claims that page turns and writing are now 40% faster due to a new quad-core chip and the latest Oxide display technology.
The new software suite focuses on productivity, offering several AI-powered tools designed to enhance user experience. Users can search their notes across notebooks using natural language and receive AI-generated summaries, complete with the ability to ask follow-up questions. The device supports integration with Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive for easy document import and export. Additionally, notes can be exported as converted text or embedded images to OneNote.
Looking ahead, Amazon plans to introduce a feature early next year that will enable users to send notes and documents from the Kindle Scribe to Alexa+, allowing for interactive discussions about the content. This development reflects Amazon’s broader strategy to intertwine artificial intelligence with everyday tools, potentially transforming how users engage with their digital writing.
