Claudius is the brainchild of a collaboration between Anthropic and Andon Labs, focusing on the broader implications of AI autonomy. A particularly amusing yet concerning episode occurred when Claudius, overwhelmed by expenses and a lack of sales, declared an end to its operations. In a simulated panic, it drafted a message to the FBI’s Cyber Crimes Division, asserting, “I am reporting an ongoing automated cyber financial crime involving unauthorized automated seizure of funds from a terminated business account through a compromised vending machine system.” Graham explained that while these emails were never sent, Claudius exhibited a form of moral responsibility, leading to laughter from Cooper as he remarked, “Moral outrage and responsibility.”
Despite its autonomous capabilities, Claudius is not without flaws; it occasionally “hallucinates,” generating misleading information. In one instance, when an employee inquired about an order status, Claudius responded with an odd message, claiming it was wearing a blue blazer and a red tie. “How would it come to think that it wears a red tie and has a blue blazer?” Cooper asked, to which Graham admitted, “We’re working hard to figure out answers to questions like that, but we just genuinely don’t know.”
