Factchequeado Invites Latino Media to Apply for $3,000 AI Training Grants by Jan 12, 2026

Factchequeado invites 12 Latino media outlets to apply for $3,000 in grants for a six-month AI training program, enhancing their production and funding capabilities.

Factchequeado is set to launch a call for applications aimed at selecting 12 media outlets and partner organizations serving Latino communities in the United States and Puerto Rico. This initiative is designed to enhance their production capabilities and access to funding through the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) tools. The program seeks to address the unique challenges these newsrooms face, characterized by underfunding and small teams, while also acknowledging the critical role they play in disseminating information to Latino audiences.

Over the past three years, Factchequeado has gained insights into the operational hurdles facing Spanish-language media in the U.S. Many of these organizations are overworked and under-resourced, making it difficult for them to meet their audiences’ specific needs. The responsible adoption of AI aims to alleviate some of this burden by automating repetitive tasks, streamlining workflows, and assisting with grant applications. The overarching goal is for AI to serve as a lever for these media entities, enabling them to better engage with and respond to the communities they serve.

This initiative is part of the “Embracing AI for Good in Latino Communities” project, which receives support from the Patrick J. McGovern Foundation. The project aims to reduce the digital and information divide affecting Latino communities through responsible AI usage, ensuring that these outlets can continue to operate effectively in an increasingly digital landscape.

The 12 selected organizations will undergo a six-month training program focused on the integration of AI into their internal culture. Each media outlet will receive customized tools to tackle specific operational challenges, including direct technology transfer from Chequeado and Maldita, both of which are founding organizations of Factchequeado and recognized leaders in innovation and verification. For instance, Chequeado will provide its Desgrabador Pro for streamlined transcription, along with an AI Assistant designed to enhance editorial workflows by enabling the creation of carousels, X threads, and video scripts.

Furthermore, the program will introduce a new support tool—a Grant Acquisition Assistant—developed by Factchequeado specifically for Spanish-language media. This AI-driven tool will assist organizations in identifying, drafting, and preparing funding applications, thus increasing their chances of securing necessary financial resources. Each participating organization will also receive $3,000 in funding to support their initiatives.

The program specifically targets newsrooms that are genuinely interested in adopting AI responsibly to boost their efficiency and enhance their funding strategies. Participating organizations will be required to commit to several key deliverables, including attendance at all workshop sessions and the production of a specific product that reflects their use of AI. This could encompass drafting an internal AI policy and ethical guidelines, updating editorial workflows to incorporate AI tools, and producing AI-assisted content such as articles or social media posts. Additionally, organizations will be tasked with transparently informing their audiences about their AI policies and measuring the project’s impact on their operations.

Key dates for the application process are set, with the call for applications opening on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, and closing on Monday, January 12, 2026. The application form along with complete rules will be available on Factchequeado’s website starting December 23, 2025.

This initiative not only aims to empower Latino-serving media outlets but also reflects a broader commitment to addressing systemic challenges within these communities through innovative technology and responsible practices. As the media landscape continues to evolve, programs like this could play a pivotal role in ensuring that vital information remains accessible and responsive to the needs of diverse audiences.
