Google is implementing significant updates to its Search and Gemini AI platforms, focusing on enhancing the visibility and design of citations in AI-generated results. The company announced it will increase the number of in-line links presented in AI Mode responses, providing users with direct references to the sources that inform generated summaries. This change is part of a broader initiative to improve transparency in AI-generated content.
In conjunction with the increase in links, Google plans to revamp the link presentation, incorporating short contextual explanations that clarify the relevance of each link. This move aims to facilitate easier navigation for users seeking original content and further aligns with ongoing discussions among publishers and advertisers regarding shifts in search traffic patterns. Despite these enhancements, Google has indicated that the updates are not a direct response to pressures from the publishing community.
Additionally, the tech giant is expanding its Preferred Sources feature globally, which allows users to prioritize news outlets in the Top Stories section of Search. Initially launched in the United States and India, this feature will now roll out to English-speaking users worldwide in the coming days, with plans for broader language support anticipated early next year.
Google is also introducing a subscription links carousel, designed to showcase articles from outlets that users are already subscribed to. This feature aims to streamline access for users to content they are financially committed to. The subscription carousel will first appear in the Gemini app over the next few weeks, with plans to integrate it into AI Overviews and AI Mode subsequently.
Further updates include enhancements to the Web Guide, an experimental feature leveraging AI to categorize links into topic groups. Google has reported that Web Guide has become twice as fast and is now appearing more frequently in the All tab of Search for users who opted into this experimental feature.
These developments not only signify Google’s commitment to improving user experience across its platforms but also highlight the ongoing evolution of AI in content generation and information retrieval. As Google continues to refine its AI capabilities, the company is positioning itself to address the growing demand for accuracy and relevance in digital search results.
