Harper Adams University has been awarded £500,000 to enhance its teaching capabilities in artificial intelligence (AI) and engineering. The funding, provided by the Office for Students, England’s higher education regulator, aims to establish a new centre for AI in manufacturing and agricultural technology in Telford.
Of the total funding, £400,000 will be allocated to the development of the new facility, which will be located in Telford town centre, specifically in a building known as the Quad. The university plans to equip this centre with high-specification IT equipment, including AI workstations, immersive learning pods, edge computing servers, and virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) devices.
The remaining £100,000 will be invested in upgrading the university’s Collaborative Simulation Laboratory at its Edgmond campus. This facility is central to the university’s engineering teaching and research, employing advanced simulation techniques to test and refine products prior to their physical production.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Ken Sloan expressed enthusiasm about the funding, stating, “This funding will help us to deliver high-quality AI learning in the heart of the community we serve.” The investment is part of a broader initiative involving 60 universities or colleges across England, aimed at improving the quality of education in critical technological fields.
The emphasis on AI education aligns with a growing demand for skilled professionals in technology-driven sectors. As industries increasingly adopt AI solutions, the need for well-trained engineers and technologists has never been more pressing. Programs such as Harper Adams’ initiative will contribute significantly to filling the skills gap.
Incorporating cutting-edge technology into the curriculum, the Telford centre will provide students with practical, hands-on experience, better preparing them for future careers in technology and engineering. The university’s focus on AI and manufacturing resonates with national goals to enhance the UK’s position as a leader in innovation and technology.
As part of its ongoing commitment to advanced education, Harper Adams University aims to position itself as a key player in the intersection of AI and engineering, fostering a new generation of professionals equipped to tackle the challenges of modern industries. This initiative not only elevates the university’s educational offerings but also reinforces its role in supporting community development through technology.
The establishment of the AI centre and the enhancement of the simulation laboratory signify a strategic move towards integrating more comprehensive technological training into the educational framework. As collaboration between academia and industry continues to develop, institutions like Harper Adams University are poised to make a lasting impact on the future workforce.
