Mistral Launches Open Source Devstral Small 2 with 24B Parameters for Offline Coding

Mistral unveils Devstral Small 2, a 24B-parameter open-source coding model for laptops, enhancing offline development and optimizing software engineering tasks.

French AI startup Mistral has launched Devstral Small 2, a fully open source coding model designed for laptop use, alongside Vibe CLI, a command-line interface that facilitates offline software development. This release positions Mistral as a significant player in the growing field of accessible AI-powered coding solutions.

The new model, Devstral Small 2, features 24 billion parameters and is tailored for users who require powerful coding capabilities without the demands of extensive hardware. It offers the same long-context performance as its larger counterpart, Devstral 2, which boasts 123 billion parameters and a 256K-token context window. While Devstral 2 requires four H100 GPUs for deployment, Devstral Small 2 can efficiently run on a single GPU or standard laptop, making it particularly appealing for developers working in resource-constrained environments.

In terms of performance, Devstral 2 achieves a score of 72.2% on the SWE-bench Verified metric, while Devstral Small 2 follows with a score of 68.0%. Both models are designed to optimize software engineering tasks, which are increasingly reliant on AI technologies.

The introduction of Vibe CLI enhances the capabilities of these models. This terminal-native tool is engineered to streamline project-wide code understanding, orchestration, and refactoring, thus providing developers with greater flexibility and control over their coding workflows. Released under the same Apache 2.0 license as Devstral Small 2, it also ensures developers can work independently without reliance on software-as-a-service (SaaS) solutions.

Mistral’s licensing strategy reflects a commitment to open-source principles while maintaining certain commercial boundaries. The fully open-source Devstral Small 2 allows unrestricted commercial or open-source use, whereas Devstral 2 comes with a modified MIT license that restricts its use to companies generating less than $20 million in monthly revenue, thereby requiring a commercial license for larger enterprises.

Industry experts have responded positively to the launch, with Victor Mustar, Head of Product at Hugging Face, raising the question: “Is the small, Apache 2.0 licensed variant the new local coding king?” This sentiment underscores a broader trend where developers increasingly seek local, offline solutions that enhance privacy and reduce dependency on cloud services.

Mistral’s development reflects the growing demand for models that prioritize portability and efficiency, catering to a diverse range of users from independent developers to larger organizations. As the landscape of AI-driven software development continues to evolve, Mistral’s offerings represent a significant advancement in tools available for coding and software engineering.

Looking ahead, the implications of Mistral’s innovations could be profound, potentially influencing how software is developed and deployed. As more developers adopt local tools like Devstral Small 2 and Vibe CLI, the shift towards offline capabilities may redefine the standards for productivity and collaboration within the tech industry.
