Moonshot AI and MiniMax Surpass OpenAI Models, Paving China’s Path to AI Leadership

Moonshot AI’s Kimi K2 Thinking outperforms OpenAI’s GPT-5 and Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet 4.5, signaling China’s rise in global AI competitiveness.

Chinese artificial intelligence start-ups Moonshot AI and MiniMax are positioning themselves as formidable contenders in the global AI landscape, aiming to rival US frontier labs by 2025. Their emergence is underscored by the recent accomplishments of DeepSeek, which has garnered attention as a leading representative of China’s AI ambitions.

Founded by 33-year-old Yang Zhilin, Moonshot AI has made significant strides in the Chinese AI ecosystem with the launch of its upgraded reasoning model, Kimi K2 Thinking, earlier this month. This new system has reportedly outperformed two of the world’s most sophisticated closed-source AI models, OpenAI‘s GPT-5 and Anthropic‘s Claude Sonnet 4.5, across multiple benchmarks.

Deedy Das of Menlo Ventures described the release of Kimi K2 Thinking as “a turning point in AI,” highlighting the significance of a Chinese open-source model achieving top performance. Echoing this sentiment, Nathan Lambert from the Allen Institute for AI commended the new model for narrowing the performance gap between open-source and leading closed-source systems.

Meanwhile, MiniMax, led by founder Yan Junjie, has also made waves by launching its M2 model. This model achieved a remarkable score on Artificial Analysis‘s overall intelligence index, placing it first among open models and just behind the latest offerings from OpenAI and Anthropic.

The rise of these two start-ups highlights China’s increasing capability to challenge the US in developing foundational AI models. As tech giants like Alibaba Group Holding and ByteDance forge ahead with their own large language models and AI infrastructures, a new wave of agile Chinese start-ups continues to make substantial progress to remain competitive in the rapidly evolving global AI arena.

With the continued advancements from Moonshot AI and MiniMax, the landscape of artificial intelligence appears set for a notable transformation, reflecting China’s growing prowess in a field traditionally dominated by American companies. As these firms strive to push the boundaries of AI technology, their achievements may signal a broader shift in the balance of innovation and development in the tech industry.
