OpenAI Reveals Prototype for AI Device, Set to Launch in Under 2 Years, Jony Ive Confirms

OpenAI, led by Jony Ive, is prototyping a groundbreaking AI device set to launch in under 2 years, aiming to redefine human-computer interaction.

OpenAI, despite its leading position in the generative AI space, is venturing into the hardware sector. This ambitious plan has been in development since the company recruited former Apple chief designer Jony Ive to oversee its hardware division. The acquisition of Ive’s startup, io device, for $6.5 billion further underlines OpenAI’s commitment to integrating hardware into its strategy.

Though OpenAI appears strategically poised to enter the hardware market, specific details about its forthcoming device have remained largely under wraps. However, hints have emerged. CEO Sam Altman recently mentioned that the company is working on a small family of devices aimed at transforming human-computer interaction. He acknowledged challenges in securing sufficient computational resources for ChatGPT, complicating the hardware development process.

Further complicating matters, a recent report suggested that the launch of the AI device has been delayed until after 2026 due to concerns over privacy, computational power, and user experience. “Do not expect anything very soon,” Altman cautioned. In a more optimistic turn, new insights have surfaced regarding the hardware project. During a recent conversation with Laurene Powell Jobs at Emerson Collective’s 2025 Demo Day, Jony Ive disclosed that OpenAI is currently prototyping the much-anticipated AI device, which is projected to be available in “less than 2 years.”

In this context, Altman has articulated the limitations of current technology, arguing that today’s systems are not equipped to excel in an AI-driven future, pushing the benchmarks for artificial general intelligence (AGI) further out of reach. This sentiment suggests that OpenAI may be developing a device that addresses these critical deficiencies. According to Altman, the planned device will be smaller than a smartphone yet designed to be simple, beautiful, and playful.

Ive expressed his vision for the device, stating, “I love solutions that teeter on appearing almost naive in their simplicity, and I also love incredibly intelligent, sophisticated products that you want to touch, and you feel no intimidation.” He emphasized the importance of creating a product that users can interact with casually, which he believes could lead to a more intuitive experience. Both Altman and Ive appear confident that their device could mark a significant technological disruption, potentially rivalling the impact of the iPhone’s launch in 2007.

As OpenAI continues to navigate the complexities of hardware development, the alignment of its ambitious vision with practical execution remains a focal point. The company’s ability to address privacy, computational, and usability challenges in the coming years will be crucial as it seeks to redefine the landscape of human-computer interaction.
