MARQUETTE, Mich. – The rising popularity of artificial intelligence (AI) among children brings with it potential risks that parents must navigate, a topic highlighted at a recent workshop organized by Athena Global Learning at the Peter White Public Library. The free class, held on Saturday and limited to 12 preregistered attendees, aimed to educate parents on the intricacies of AI, including its safety measures and how to identify misuse.
“One of the things we really need to think about first and foremost is their privacy and their safety and security,” said Athena Stanley, founder of Athena Global Learning. Stanley emphasized the importance of ensuring that students do not share personal information through AI platforms and that images are shared securely and through appropriate channels.
The workshop served as an introduction to the various aspects of AI, including its applications and potential pitfalls, aimed at equipping parents with the knowledge needed to guide their children in safe usage. As AI tools become increasingly accessible, understanding how to use them responsibly is vital.
Athena Global Learning plans to expand its offerings in the coming months, with additional workshops scheduled to address different demographics and applications of AI. “We will have our youth workshop coming up in February and there is an AI workshop for business in the springtime,” Stanley noted. Parents and community members interested in future sessions can check the organization’s website for updates.
The growing integration of AI in everyday life raises concerns about digital literacy and safety among younger users. As children engage with AI tools for educational and recreational purposes, the need for guardians to remain informed about these technologies becomes crucial. Workshops like the one held by Athena Global Learning are designed to foster discussions around responsible AI usage, helping families navigate the digital landscape.
The initiative reflects a broader trend of organizations recognizing the need for education on emerging technologies. As AI continues to evolve, keeping pace with advancements and understanding their implications will be imperative for parents, educators, and students alike. The challenges posed by AI misuse, including privacy violations and exposure to inappropriate content, underscore the importance of proactive learning and engagement.
As schools increasingly incorporate AI into their curriculums, workshops aimed at both parents and students will likely become a staple. The emphasis on digital safety and privacy will be pivotal as educators strive to prepare young learners for a technology-driven future.
