Runway Launches Gen 4.5 Video Model, Outshining Veo 3 and Sora 2 Pro in Tests

Runway’s Gen 4.5 video model surpasses competitors with 1,247 Elo points, achieving unmatched motion quality and visual fidelity in independent tests.

AI startup Runway has unveiled its latest video generation model, Gen 4.5, which has reportedly surpassed competing technologies in independent evaluations. The announcement, made on December 1, 2025, positions Gen 4.5 as a significant advancement in video generation, focusing on motion quality, prompt adherence, and visual fidelity.

Runway’s new tool allows users to create high-definition videos through simple text prompts that define desired actions and movements. The firm claims that the model excels in understanding physics, human and camera movements, and cause-and-effect relationships, setting a new benchmark for the industry. “Gen-4.5 is a cutting-edge technology that sets a new standard for motion quality in video generation, prompt adherence, and visual fidelity,” the developers stated in a recent announcement.

According to rankings from the independent company Artificial Analysis, Gen 4.5 has secured the top position in the Video Arena, where various AI models are tested. In this evaluation, Google’s Veo 3 ranked second, while OpenAI’s Sora 2 Pro came in seventh place. The rankings are determined by user comparisons between models without knowledge of the companies involved, ensuring an unbiased assessment.

Runway emphasized that Gen 4.5 represents notable advancements in both pre-training data efficiency and post-training techniques for video models. It scored 1,247 Elo points on the Artificial Analysis Text to Video leaderboard, indicative of its strong performance. “We managed to surpass trillion-dollar corporations with a team of 100 people,” said Runway CEO Cristóbal Valenzuela, highlighting the achievement against larger competitors.

The model’s capabilities extend to executing complex sequential instructions, allowing for detailed specifications like camera choreography, intricate scene compositions, precise timing of events, and subtle atmospheric changes—all within a single prompt. This flexibility is intended to enhance user creativity and streamline the video production process.

Runway also noted that Gen 4.5 achieves an unprecedented level of physical and visual accuracy. “Objects move with realistic mass and momentum. Surfaces behave as they do in the real world,” the developers pointed out, suggesting that users can choose to follow or ignore the laws of physics in their video creations. Despite its high level of sophistication, the neural network is not without its challenges, as some users have reported issues with cause-and-effect relationships and object consistency. The development team is actively seeking solutions to these concerns.

The rollout of Gen 4.5 will occur gradually, with full availability expected by the end of the week through Runway’s platform, API, and selected partners. The model’s development was significantly supported by Nvidia’s graphics cards, utilized at every stage from initial research to pre-training. Runway’s collaboration with the chipmaker focused on optimizing training efficiency, inference speed, and overall performance.

This announcement comes in the wake of updates from major players like OpenAI and Google, which also introduced new versions of their AI models for video generation. As the competition in the rapidly evolving AI landscape intensifies, companies are striving to carve out their niches in an increasingly crowded market.

With the introduction of Gen 4.5, Runway aims to solidify its position as a leader in the AI-driven video generation sector, showcasing the potential for innovative tools that cater to both professional creators and casual users alike. The ongoing advancements in this technology suggest that the capabilities for video creation will continue to evolve, offering exciting opportunities for storytelling and content creation in the digital age.
