YouTube’s “AI Slop” Content Rakes in $117M Annually; 20% of New Recommendations

YouTube’s “AI slop” content generates $117 million annually, with over 20% of new user recommendations classified as low-quality AI-generated videos.

AI Content on YouTube Surges, Raising Concerns

More than 20% of the videos recommended to new users on YouTube fall into the category of “AI slop,” a term used to describe low-quality content generated using artificial intelligence. This type of content reportedly generates around $117 million annually. The findings come from a global study analyzing 15,000 of the most popular channels on the platform, which revealed that 278 channels exclusively produce this “AI slop” content, amassing over 63 billion views and approximately 221 million subscribers.

The study’s authors conducted experiments by creating a new YouTube account to evaluate the recommendations. They discovered that 104 out of the first 500 videos presented to the user also belonged to the “AI slop” category. Additionally, nearly 10% of the fastest-growing channels on the platform were identified as producing this type of content.

Among the notable examples of “AI slop” channels is Bandar Apna Dost, based in India. This channel, which has garnered around 2.4 billion views, presents animated adventures featuring a rhesus macaque and a Hulk-inspired character battling demons while traveling in a tomato-shaped helicopter. Experts estimate that the channel could yield annual revenues upwards of $4.25 million.

Another significant example is Pouty Frenchie from Singapore, a children’s channel that has achieved about 2 billion views. It showcases the whimsical exploits of a French bulldog, including imaginary quests in a fairy-tale forest and fictional cooking adventures. The estimated annual revenue for this channel is nearly $4 million.

The Pakistani channel The AI World produces short films focused on social issues like floods, featuring titles such as “Poor Man” and “Kitchen During the Flood.” These videos often accompany soothing sounds like “Relaxing Rain, Thunder and Lightning for Sleep” and have collectively received over 1.3 billion views.

In a broader cultural context, the term “slop” has been designated as the Word of the Year for 2025 by several reputable dictionaries and publications, reflecting societal concerns regarding the quality of AI-generated content. The increasing prevalence of such content underscores the significant role of artificial intelligence in shaping YouTube’s ecosystem, while also highlighting the urgent need for platforms to enhance transparency and accountability among content creators.

As the landscape of online video continues to evolve, the implications of AI-generated content are becoming more pronounced. Stakeholders, including creators, platforms, and viewers, may need to engage in more meaningful discussions about the quality and authenticity of content shared in digital spaces.
