The Globe and Mail reported that Google’s AI summary, intended to provide quick overviews, mistakenly blended MacIsaac’s biography with that of another individual sharing his name.

“Google screwed up, and it put me in a dangerous situation,” MacIsaac told the newspaper. Though the AI overview has since been updated, the musician expressed concern about the broader implications. He noted that the misinformation could deter event organizers from hiring him and mislead potential audience members who may not have seen the correction.

In light of the incident, MacIsaac emphasized the importance of individuals monitoring their online presence. “People should be aware that they should check their online presence to see if someone else’s name comes in,” he remarked.

Following the emergence of the false claim, the Sipekne’katik First Nation issued an apology, expressing regret for the harm caused to MacIsaac’s reputation and livelihood. “We deeply regret the harm this error caused to your reputation, your livelihood, and your sense of personal safety,” a spokesperson stated in a letter shared with the Globe. “It is important to us to state clearly that this situation was the result of mistaken identity caused by an AI error, not a reflection of who you are.”

A representative for Google acknowledged the dynamic nature of search results and AI-generated overviews. The company stated, “When issues arise — like if our features misinterpret web content or miss some context — we use those examples to improve our systems, and may take action under our policies.”

MacIsaac’s experience highlights a significant challenge in the age of AI: the potential for reputational damage from automated systems. The musician’s case raises important questions about accountability when errors are made by technology that is becoming increasingly integrated into daily life. Although the correction has been made, the extent to which misinformation may have spread is difficult to quantify.
