A recent study by Liferay, a prominent provider of Digital Experience Platforms (DXPs), indicates that 75% of users will abandon a website that appears unsafe or behaves unexpectedly, often opting for a competitor to complete their tasks. This finding underscores the critical importance of maintaining user confidence in digital environments.
The 2026 Liferay Broken Trust Report, conducted in December 2025, gathered insights from a survey of 1,000 U.S. adults aged 18 and older, utilizing the Pollfish platform. Respondents recounted their experiences with suspicious or “off” moments on websites, illustrating the ways these incidents impacted their trust, as well as the signals that helped restore their confidence.
Key findings from the report highlight a “one-strike trust economy,” where 61% of participants indicated that a single “off” moment can significantly alter their perception of a brand’s trustworthiness. Furthermore, 71% identified website reliability as a crucial factor in determining overall trust. A notable 40% expressed an immediate concern for safety when a page appeared different, and 28% admitted they would leave the site right away. Even established brands are not immune, as 91% of respondents believe that well-known companies can also fall victim to fake or compromised websites.
This research reveals that even brief glitches can have a lasting negative impact on user engagement. Companies that neglect to address minor inconsistencies risk alienating users and damaging their online credibility. The report outlines several strategies to minimize site abandonment and enhance user experience.
Firstly, organizations are urged to communicate transparently with users by providing visible messages that explain any ongoing glitches and outline the steps being taken to rectify them. Ensuring design consistency across web pages is also vital, as maintaining a stable layout and predictable behavior can significantly enhance user confidence. Additionally, businesses should prioritize the visibility of security cues, such as security badges and recognizable brand elements, to reassure users. Promptly monitoring and addressing technical glitches—like layout shifts, asset errors, and unexpected pop-ups—before they reach users can further mitigate risks to trust.
