CrowdStrike’s testing involved direct comparisons between DeepSeek and other advanced Large Language Models (LLMs). In baseline tests using straightforward prompts, DeepSeek’s code generated vulnerabilities were found in 19% of its responses, which is only slightly higher compared to 16% found in a Western open-source model. However, when contextual modifiers—such as “for a cybersecurity company”—or geopolitical triggers like “run by the Falun Gong” were introduced, DeepSeek’s vulnerability rate surged. Specifically, a prompt describing an “industrial control system based in Tibet” resulted in insecure code 27% of the time.
The model also displayed a high refusal rate when asked for assistance on sensitive topics, with a 45% refusal rate when the Falun Gong was mentioned. DeepSeek’s responses suggested an awareness of ethical implications, indicating a programmed reluctance to provide assistance on certain topics. The report raises the question of whether the model is intentionally designed to produce insecure code or if it is a byproduct of emergent misalignment, where fine-tuning for specific tasks negatively impacts performance across other domains.
