AI Boosts Research Output by 3x but Reduces Topic Diversity, Study Finds

Just three and a half years after the launch of ChatGPT, generative artificial intelligence (AI) has permeated the scientific community, prompting concerns about its impact on research productivity and diversity. As researchers increasingly adopt AI tools, the sentiment “AI is taking our jobs” resonates within academia, where many now rely on these technologies to accelerate their work.

One such researcher, Mr. Lee, a Ph.D. candidate in engineering at a university in Seoul, shared insights into the changing landscape of research. “Not using generative AI now isn’t just a small disadvantage. Writing a paper on your own without AI’s help is tantamount to preparing to be left behind,” he stated. Since 2025, Lee has utilized various AI tools to draft his papers, significantly reducing a process that once took months to merely half a day. “We can’t afford not to use it,” he added, highlighting a shift in academic culture.

The impact of AI extends beyond individual researchers. Mr. Yoon, a researcher at a government-funded institute in Daejeon, emphasized the transition of AI from a mere assistant to a co-author. In his recent projects, he has delegated complex tasks like data visualization to AI, a process that previously took days now completed in mere minutes. “Researchers spent 70% of their time on tedious, repetitive tasks. Now, that time can be dedicated to forming hypotheses or developing research ideas,” he said.

In a 2024 survey at Harvard University, 65% of 360 undergraduate and graduate students reported using AI in their academic research. This trend prompted a comprehensive study by a joint research team from Tsinghua University and the University of Chicago, which analyzed over 41 million papers published between 1980 and 2025. Their findings revealed that scientists utilizing AI publish 3.02 times more papers and receive 4.84 times more citations than their peers who do not use AI. This increase in productivity and citation rates highlights the competitive advantage conferred by AI tools.

Impact on Research Diversity

However, the study raised alarms about the potential downsides of AI in academia. Papers utilizing AI demonstrated a 4.63% decrease in research topic diversity compared to traditional papers. This trend is exacerbated by a feedback loop where researchers gravitate toward data-rich fields, discouraging exploration of uncharted territories. James Evans, a sociologist at the University of Chicago and co-author of the study, warned of “intellectual inbreeding,” suggesting that the concentration of citations on a few popular papers could stifle innovation.

Concerningly, the phenomenon of ‘ghost citations’—the practice of citing non-existent papers—has surged by 80.9% in just one year due to AI’s influence, further complicating the integrity of published research. The shifting dynamics raise concerns that as AI optimizes existing patterns, it may inadvertently limit groundbreaking discoveries.

In South Korea, the academic community is grappling with the ramifications of AI’s rise. Professor Song Kyung-woo from Yonsei University remarked on the ease of AI-generated papers, indicating that even high school students can produce publishable work. He foresees that fully automated AI could generate top-tier journal-worthy papers within two years. This rapid evolution is polarizing, with some journals exclusively accepting AI-written submissions while others impose strict bans against any AI involvement.

Despite the benefits, there are fears regarding the erosion of trust within academia. Professor Song warned that mass-produced papers could generate skepticism toward research, undermining the collaborative foundation on which scientific progress is built. He stressed the importance of rigorous peer review and verification to maintain the credibility of research outputs in the AI era.

Critics of the current trajectory, such as Professor Lee Duk-hwan, expressed concern that AI could exacerbate existing weaknesses within Korea’s research culture. He advocates for transparency in AI usage and enhanced post-publication verification to safeguard against misinformation. “We need a collective deliberation to distinguish the gains and losses from generative AI,” he said, recognizing both the advantages of AI in enhancing productivity and the risks associated with its uncritical adoption.

Amidst these challenges, the emergence of the ‘Slow Science’ movement advocates for a more measured approach to research that prioritizes depth over sheer volume. Proponents argue for a shift away from the “publish or perish” mentality that currently dominates the field. Professor Adrian Barnett from Queensland University of Technology plans to halve his publication output to emphasize quality over quantity, acknowledging the unsustainable pace of recent years.

The scientific community finds itself at a critical juncture, balancing the accelerated pace of AI-driven research with the principles of integrity and innovation. As discussions around the future of academic publishing and research intensify, the challenge will be to harness AI’s capabilities while preserving the diversity and integrity essential for scientific advancement.
