Figma is set to enhance its design platform with the launch of three new AI-powered creative tools aimed at simplifying image editing for users. These features, which will be integrated into Figma Design and Figma Draw, allow users to efficiently remove objects from images, isolate specific elements for repositioning, and extend image backgrounds without compromising quality.
The new tools include the Erase object and Isolate object functionalities, designed to complement Figma’s existing lasso tool. This tool enables users to draw around targeted sections of an image, allowing for quick elimination of objects or individuals within those selections. The background is automatically filled in after an object is erased, while the isolation feature separates objects from the background, facilitating direct editing or repositioning.
Additionally, the Expand image tool allows users to stretch the background of an image to new aspect ratios “without distortion,” as stated by Figma. This functionality bears resemblance to Adobe’s Generative Expand tool available in Photoshop, which also employs generative AI to seamlessly fill the newly created space, ensuring it blends with the original image. While Adobe offers a more comprehensive suite of creative tools, Figma’s introduction of these native features could diminish reliance on external platforms for basic editing tasks.
To streamline access to these innovations, Figma is also launching a revamped image editing toolbar that consolidates these new tools alongside existing functionalities, including the Remove background feature. The newly introduced capabilities will be available to users with “Full Seat” access, the subscription tier that unlocks the complete range of Figma’s design products. Figma has indicated plans to extend these editing tools to additional applications within its ecosystem next year, potentially broadening their usability.
The move to integrate more advanced editing tools reflects a growing trend among design platforms to incorporate AI capabilities, as competition intensifies in the creative software market. Companies like Adobe and Figma are increasingly looking to AI to enhance user experience and expand their offerings, especially as digital design becomes more essential across various industries.
As Figma continues to evolve its tools in response to user demands, the introduction of AI-driven features signifies a significant step in enhancing creative workflows. By reducing the necessity for users to switch between different platforms for image editing, Figma aims to solidify its position in the competitive landscape of design software, catering to a user base that values efficiency and integrated solutions.
