Luca, an AI-driven learning platform, has successfully closed an US$8 million Series A funding round, led by **6 Degrees Capital**. This investment aims to enhance the company’s foothold in the K-12 education market in **Mexico** and facilitate regional expansion. Participating in this funding round were **Explorer**, **Heartcore Capital**, and **Shilling VC**. The recent transaction brings Luca’s total capital raised to over US$13 million since its seed round in 2022.
As part of this funding operation, Luca appointed two notable figures to its board: **Juan Romero**, CEO of ISP LatAm, and **Vasco Pedro**, Founder of Unbabel. Thibault D’hondt, General Partner at 6 Degrees Capital, remarked, “AI arrives just as the system shows tension from every side: a shortage of overworked and underpaid teachers, classes that are too large, and governments that respond with more bureaucracy. Six out of ten teachers in the United States already use these tools because they feel naturally attracted to them.”
The urgency for scalable educational solutions is underscored by concerning statistics from the **2022 PISA test** conducted by the OECD, which indicated that 66% of students in Mexico do not meet minimum competency levels in mathematics, while 47% are below the basic level in reading comprehension. In fact, the educational gap in **Latin America** compared to advanced systems exceeds two school years. With over 30 million students in Mexico’s K-12 system, the country holds a significant position in the regional education landscape, which includes more than 120 million Spanish-speaking students.
Frederico Bello, Founder and CEO of Luca, emphasized that AI technology is pivotal in delivering personalized learning experiences to millions of students, thereby transforming instructional methods through adaptive technologies. Luca operates as a hybrid educational system, integrating both digital and printed content that adheres to the **Nueva Escuela Mexicana** curriculum. The platform encompasses comprehensive subjects such as Mathematics, Spanish, Sciences, and English for primary and secondary education.
The software utilizes AI to alleviate administrative pressures on teachers, automating tasks such as lesson planning, exam creation, and essay grading. This functionality has led to a reported 28% reduction in academic management time for educators. Furthermore, research validated by the **Tecnológico de Monterrey** indicates that the platform can improve academic performance in key subjects by up to 20%.
Looking ahead, Luca’s growth strategy for the next five years includes three primary objectives: solidifying its position as the leading K-12 player in Mexico, expanding operations into other Latin American countries, and developing new personalized education products leveraging AI technology. Currently, Luca serves over 30,000 active students in Mexico and has been recognized by **Google** and **Arizona State University** as the third-best EdTech company globally.
