Netanyahu Launches AI Server Farm Initiative to Boost Israel’s Global Tech Leadership

Netanyahu accelerates Israel’s AI server farm initiative, aiming for 1 gigawatt capacity to create thousands of jobs and bolster its global tech leadership.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Sunday that the government’s decision to accelerate the establishment of artificial intelligence server farms represents a “major breakthrough” and a strategic initiative aimed at enhancing Israel’s standing on the global stage. Speaking at a government meeting, Netanyahu emphasized the importance of leadership in artificial intelligence and quantum technology as crucial elements for enhancing the country’s power. “This country is small; it needs to have immense power,” he stated, highlighting the dual necessity of military strength and technological prowess.

Netanyahu outlined that this initiative is part of a broader security and strategic vision, which he plans to unveil in the coming days. He underscored the significance of technological advancements in providing global power advantages, particularly for a “small and threatened country” like Israel. The Prime Minister expressed gratitude towards Energy and Infrastructure Minister Eli Cohen and other ministers for their efforts in moving the plan forward.

Cohen elaborated on the government’s commitment to removing regulatory barriers and expediting planning processes for building data centers, which he described as pivotal to Israel’s ambitions of becoming a global powerhouse in artificial intelligence. “Today we are presenting a motion to remove barriers and accelerate processes for building data centers, which is a crucial step on Israel’s path to becoming a global artificial intelligence powerhouse,” he stated.

In the last three months, planning and construction procedures have commenced for data centers with a capacity of 1 gigawatt. Cohen noted that this capacity exceeds five percent of Israel’s total energy consumption in that period, with additional projects in the pipeline. He added that the new facilities are expected to create thousands of jobs and yield billions of dollars in state revenue.

Moreover, Cohen announced plans to expand the energy infrastructure necessary to support this growth. The government initially aimed to construct two power plants by the end of the decade but will now double that number, incorporating both gas-based and renewable energy facilities. This expansion is likely to further bolster Israel’s position in the global technology landscape, responding to the burgeoning demand for energy in tandem with artificial intelligence advancements.

This strategic initiative signals a clear intent by the Israeli government to position itself at the forefront of the rapidly evolving AI sector, aiming not just for economic benefits but also for significant geopolitical advantages. As global competition in technology intensifies, Israel’s proactive measures to enhance its technological capabilities may play a vital role in its national security and international relations moving forward.
