Over 40 high school students from public and private schools in the Greenwich area convened at Greenwich Town Hall last Tuesday for a finance and artificial intelligence workshop aimed at enhancing financial literacy. This student-organized event marked the second installment of the Greenwich Finance Series, an initiative spearheaded by Brunswick School student Jack Wendell in collaboration with the First Selectman’s Youth Commission.
The series was established to provide students with foundational knowledge in personal finance and investing. Among the schools represented were Greenwich High School, Brunswick School, Greenwich Academy, Greenwich Country Day School, Sacred Heart, Stamford High School, King School, Westhill High School, and Windrose.
“I feel like the event fulfilled our goals of teaching students personal finance and the promising benefits that artificial intelligence has on the field,” said Wendell. “I’m looking forward to planning the future of the series to see where else we can have impact!”
The workshop was structured in two segments. The first portion featured finance professionals discussing essential principles of financial literacy, including topics such as income, taxes, budgeting, assets and liabilities, and the fundamentals of investing. Among the speakers were Jon Wendell, founder of Nassau Point Investors, a small-cap private equity firm and a Harvard Business School graduate; Mack Portnoy, a Vice President at J.P. Morgan Private Bank; and Saphora Afkhami, an analyst at J.P. Morgan Private Bank.
The second segment of the event delved into the role of artificial intelligence in modern finance. After an introductory overview of how AI is reshaping the financial landscape, students engaged in a hands-on experience by exploring an AI stock prediction agent, developed by the session’s co-organizer, Jackson Lieberman. This agent is designed to analyze historical data and forecast potential stock price movements.
Lieberman, a junior at Greenwich Country Day School, led a discussion about the functionality of AI agents in financial markets today. Students participated in a practical exercise where they built their own stock-prediction agent, gaining insight into the code utilized for its creation. While Lieberman walked through the technical aspects, Wendell provided one-on-one support to students, assisting them in overcoming any challenges encountered during the exercise.
The event’s strong turnout highlights the increasing interest among young people in financial literacy within the Greenwich area. With additional events planned in the future, the series aspires to equip students with practical skills for managing expenses and investing for retirement, while also introducing them to innovative concepts that are beginning to shape the future of finance.
