Delhi Government Launches AI Training Program for 6th to 9th Graders, Starting December

Delhi’s Department of Education launches an AI training program for grades 6-9 and 11, commencing December 15, aimed at enhancing digital skills and fostering innovation.

Delhi’s Department of Education is set to launch a comprehensive artificial intelligence (AI) training program aimed at students in grades 6 to 9 and grade 11, with activities commencing this winter. The initiative, part of the government’s New Era of Entrepreneurial Ecosystem and Vision (NEEEV), is designed to enhance digital competencies and foster innovative thinking among young learners. The rollout is scheduled to occur across all education districts in Delhi between December and March.

The program will cover various themes, including mobility, logistics, sustainable practices, educational improvements, and public safety. Oversight will be provided by Additional Director of Education KS Upadhyay, who serves as the nodal officer for this initiative. The structure of the program involves collaboration across the Department of Education (DoE), Higher and Technical Education, and the ViSV foundation, ensuring a cohesive approach to AI training.

Students participating in the program will not only learn fundamental AI concepts but will also tackle real-world challenges through the application of modern technology. Mentorship is a critical component, with School Innovation Councils (SICs) and designated NEEEV teachers providing guidance to the students. The DoE articulated that “School Innovation Councils (SICs) and designated NEEEV teachers will also support the program by mentoring participating students.”

To participate, all schools must register on the Delhi AI Grind portal and select five students to serve as campus ambassadors, with nominations due by December 8. The program will kick off with school-level “mini grind” sessions beginning December 15, followed by internal evaluations. Successive rounds will lead to district and state-level selections, allowing students to showcase their skills and innovations. In the DoE’s words: “School-level ‘mini grind’ sessions will begin on December 15, followed by internal evaluations. Students will then move on to district-level and state-level selections.”

This initiative highlights a growing recognition of the importance of technology in education, particularly in developing critical skills that align with future job markets. As AI technology continues to evolve, equipping students with a foundational understanding of this field becomes increasingly vital. By engaging students early on, the Delhi government aims to cultivate a new generation of thinkers and problem solvers capable of navigating the complexities of a digital world.

The implications of the Delhi AI training program extend beyond the classroom. As students develop confidence and competence in AI, they can contribute to various sectors such as logistics, public safety, and sustainability. This forward-thinking approach aligns with global trends wherein educational institutions are re-evaluating curricula to incorporate advanced technologies, preparing students not just to adapt to changes, but to lead them.
