Ghana Government Launches Free 12-Month AI Access for Students with Google Partnership

Ghana’s government partners with Google to grant students free 12-month access to advanced AI tools, including a 2TB storage Gemini Pro Plan and certification training.

The Ghanaian government is taking significant steps to enhance digital literacy among its youth by offering free access to the Gemini App to eligible students. This initiative, announced by Communications Minister Samuel Nartey George, provides a 12-month complimentary subscription that includes 2TB of storage and access to artificial intelligence (AI) certification training.

This initiative results from a partnership between the Ministry of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations and Google, and it remains available for students aged 18 and above until December 9, 2025. The program allows students to register for a free Google AI Pro Plan, offering advanced learning and creative tools to foster their academic and professional development.

Minister George emphasized that this program is part of a larger government strategy to equip the next generation with advanced digital tools while alleviating financial burdens on students and their families. He describes it as a major investment in enhancing digital literacy and technological capabilities within the education sector.

The free subscription includes access to Gemini 2.5 Pro, Google’s latest AI model designed to tackle complex inquiries, analyze images, and assist with academic writing and homework tasks. Students will also utilize Deep Research, which generates in-depth custom reports by aggregating data from numerous reliable sources.

Beyond these features, the package incorporates NotebookLM, a digital assistant that helps users organize thoughts and summarize materials. This tool has been upgraded to include improved audio and video overviews. Additional capabilities include Veo 3 for video creation and Nano Banana, Google’s innovative image generation and editing model that allows users to transform photos and visualize abstract concepts.

Minister George expressed gratitude to Google for its ongoing collaboration, highlighting that their partnership goes beyond the AI Research Lab and the One Million Coders Programme, aimed at training one million young Ghanaians in coding and software development skills over several years. He stated that the collaboration will expand to benefit a broader number of students in Ghana.

This initiative aligns with Google’s wider efforts to provide foundational AI skills to university students across Africa, with similar programs launched in countries including Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, and Zimbabwe. By granting access to its most advanced AI tools free of charge for one year, Google aims to empower students to navigate complex issues, structure arguments, prepare for assessments, and enhance their understanding through interactive quizzes.

Minister George encouraged students throughout Ghana to seize this opportunity and urged the public to disseminate information about the program. He reiterated that the initiative is part of the government’s commitment to youth empowerment and innovation in digital technologies.

Students can register for the Gemini Pro Plan through designated online platforms, requiring verification of their student status via SheerID using official university emails or enrollment documents. It is important to note that personal Gmail accounts should be used for registration rather than school-issued emails.

After the 12-month free period, subscriptions will automatically renew unless canceled before the trial period ends. Google plans to send reminder notifications to students about the end of their offer period, allowing them to cancel subscriptions at any time to avoid charges.

This collaboration reflects the government’s strategic focus on leveraging partnerships with global tech firms to broaden access to advanced digital tools and training for Ghanaian youth. By enhancing AI literacy among students, the initiative aims to better prepare them for future workforce demands in an increasingly technology-driven global economy. The deadline for registration remains December 9, 2025, after which the offer will no longer be available, urging eligible students to sign up promptly.
