IIT Madras Launches AI Training Programme for Government Officials in Partnership with Google

IIT Madras, in partnership with Google, launches a training program for government officials to enhance responsible AI skills amid the growing demand for ethical AI governance.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras’ Centre for Responsible AI (CeRAI) has announced a new capacity-building programme aimed at training government officials on the development, procurement, and scaling of responsible artificial intelligence (AI) systems. This initiative, launched in partnership with Google and the Digital Futures Lab (DFL), was unveiled during the “Conclave on Strengthening Human Capital for the AI Era,” held at IIT Madras on Friday.

The programme is designed to equip Indian government officials with essential technical, operational, and governance skills necessary for the effective deployment of AI technologies within public institutions. As AI increasingly permeates critical sectors such as education, service delivery, and digital governance, there is a growing urgency for enhanced AI awareness and literacy, as well as the establishment of robust decision-making frameworks.

The curriculum will cover foundational AI technologies and their applications, enabling officials to assess AI solutions for procurement and scalability. It will also emphasize the implementation of responsible AI practices that align with India’s existing policy frameworks. A significant focus will be on identifying risks, limitations, and governance requirements associated with real-world AI deployments.

Participants will engage in a series of case studies, workshops, and hands-on sessions to evaluate their departments’ current AI readiness and outline pathways for adopting or enhancing AI-based tools tailored to their specific domains. This interactive approach aims to foster a deeper understanding of AI’s potential and challenges within government operations.

The Conclave on Strengthening Human Capital for the AI Era serves as a pre-summit event leading up to the anticipated India AI Impact Summit 2026, highlighting the urgency of preparing government officials for the transformative impacts of AI on public policy and administration.

As responsible AI practices gain momentum globally, this programme represents a proactive step by the Indian government to ensure that its institutions are not only equipped to harness the potential of AI but also to do so ethically and effectively. The collaboration between IIT Madras, Google, and DFL reflects a commitment to nurturing a skilled workforce capable of navigating the complexities of AI governance in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.

This initiative underscores the importance of integrating AI education into public service training, a necessity as AI technology continues to advance and influence various aspects of governance. By enhancing the skills of officials in this area, the programme aims to foster an environment where AI can be leveraged to improve public services and citizen engagement while minimizing risks associated with its deployment.

Looking ahead, the commitment to building capacity in responsible AI not only addresses immediate training needs but also positions India as a leader in the global conversation about ethical AI use in government. As nations worldwide grapple with the implications of AI technology, India’s approach may serve as a model for other governments seeking to implement responsible and effective AI strategies.
