BHUBANESWAR: The Odisha state government convened a meeting on Saturday with a senior delegation from Sarvam, an Indian artificial intelligence (AI) firm, as part of its initiative to cultivate a secure, inclusive, and sovereign AI ecosystem in alignment with the state’s Vision 2036 and Vision 2047. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi led the discussions, which also included electronics and IT minister Mukesh Mahaling, chief secretary Anu Garg, and Sarvam co-founder Pratyush Kumar among other officials.
The meeting aimed to establish AI as a long-term public capability, focusing on building a robust sovereign infrastructure, implementing population-scale applications across vital sectors, and enhancing institutional capacity within Odisha. The chief minister emphasized that the state should not just adopt technology but also position itself as a leader in technological advancement for others to emulate.
During the discussions, officials highlighted plans to develop shared and sovereign AI infrastructure, which includes secure computing and state-governed data platforms. This approach is designed to ensure that public data, AI models, and intelligence systems remain secure within Odisha’s trust boundary. The government is particularly interested in deploying voice-enabled AI applications across sectors such as education, agriculture, healthcare, e-governance, and public safety.
These systems are intended to improve the delivery of government schemes, especially for citizens in rural, tribal, and low-literacy areas. By leveraging simple conversational interfaces, the aim is to facilitate access to information regarding entitlements, benefits, and grievance redressal. This initiative reflects a broader ambition to harness technology for enhanced public service and social welfare.
Looking ahead, the state government plans to formalize this partnership with Sarvam by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) at the upcoming black swan summit scheduled for February 5 and 6. This agreement is expected to solidify the collaborative efforts to advance AI capabilities in Odisha, ensuring that the technology serves the needs of its diverse population.
As the global landscape shifts towards AI-driven solutions, Odisha’s commitment to developing a sovereign AI framework positions it strategically within the broader Indian context. The focus on sustainable and inclusive growth through technology could serve as a model for other states, promoting a future where AI is not only a tool for efficiency but also a means of empowerment for all citizens.
