OpenAI and Microsoft Fund £5.6M for UK AI Security Institute’s Alignment Project

OpenAI and Microsoft invest £5.6M in the UK AI Security Institute’s Alignment Project, boosting total funding to over £27M for safe AI development.

OpenAI and Microsoft have announced their commitment to a new funding initiative supporting the AI Security Institute’s (AISI) flagship Alignment Project, aimed at developing safe and controlled advanced AI systems. This effort is part of a broader movement to foster public trust in AI technologies that are increasingly influencing public services and job creation.

The announcement was made by UK Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy and AI Minister Kanishka Narayan as the AI Impact Summit concluded in India on February 20. The initiative marks a significant milestone in AISI’s Alignment Project, which was initially launched in the summer of the previous year.

With an additional £5.6 million from OpenAI, along with contributions from Microsoft and other partners, the total funding for the Alignment Project has now surpassed £27 million. This funding will support approximately 60 research projects across eight countries, with a second round of grants expected to be announced this summer.

AI alignment refers to the critical effort of ensuring that advanced AI systems behave as intended, avoiding unintentional or harmful actions. As AI capabilities expand, the need for reliable alignment becomes increasingly important to build confidence among users and stakeholders. Effective alignment can lead to enhanced productivity, improved healthcare outcomes, and the generation of new job opportunities across various sectors.

“AI offers us huge opportunities, but we will always be clear-eyed on the need to ensure safety is baked into it from the outset,” said Lammy. He emphasized the importance of the support from OpenAI and Microsoft in advancing these key research efforts.

Narayan echoed these sentiments, stating, “We can only unlock the full power of AI if people trust it – that’s the mission driving all of us.” He identified trust as a major barrier to AI adoption and highlighted how alignment research directly addresses this issue.

As AI technologies continue to evolve, the complexity of potential unforeseen behaviors increases. Experts warn that without concerted progress in alignment research, powerful AI models may exhibit unpredictable behaviors, posing significant challenges to global safety and governance.

AISI’s Alignment Project has garnered support from a diverse coalition of organizations, including the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, the Australian Department of Industry, Science and Resources’ AI Safety Institute, Amazon Web Services, Anthropic, and various philanthropic entities. This international collaboration underscores the global recognition of alignment as a pressing technical challenge.

The leadership of the Alignment Project includes a distinguished advisory board featuring prominent figures in AI research, such as Yoshua Bengio, Zico Kolter, Shafi Goldwasser, and Andrea Lincoln. Their expertise aims to guide the project in steering the direction of AI alignment research effectively.

Mia Glaese, VP of Research at OpenAI, remarked on the necessity of collaborative efforts, stating, “As AI systems become more capable and more autonomous, alignment has to keep pace. The hardest problems won’t be solved by any one organisation working in isolation.” She further noted that OpenAI’s support for the UK AI Security Institute’s initiative complements its internal alignment work and contributes to a broader research ecosystem focused on maintaining reliability and control over advanced AI systems.

As a hub for leading AI companies and research institutions, the UK is well-positioned to spearhead global initiatives aimed at developing trustworthy AI technologies. The Alignment Project draws on AISI’s international leadership, ensuring that leading researchers from the UK and its partners can shape the future of AI safety and predictability.

Looking ahead, the Initiative combines grant funding, access to computational infrastructure, and ongoing mentorship from leading scientists, all aimed at propelling progress in the critical field of AI alignment. With increasing capabilities and potential applications of AI, the imperative for robust alignment research grows, highlighting its significance in the responsible development and deployment of AI technologies worldwide.
