SINGAPORE, Jan 24 (Reuters) – The Singapore government announced plans to invest over S$1 billion ($778.8 million) in public artificial intelligence research through 2030. This initiative aims to enhance the nation’s technological capabilities and bolster its global competitiveness, according to a statement released by the Ministry of Digital Development and Information on Saturday.
The investment will focus on specific priority areas, including the development of responsible and resource-efficient AI technologies. Additionally, the government intends to cultivate talent at various educational levels, from pre-university students to faculty members. Funds will also be allocated to bolster industry capabilities, facilitating the broader adoption and application of AI across sectors.
This latest funding commitment is part of a series of recent government investments in the AI sector. In 2024, Singapore allocated S$500 million to secure high-performance computer resources essential for fostering innovation in both private and public sectors. Furthermore, the government had previously dedicated more than S$500 million to research and development efforts through AI Singapore, a national program designed to establish deep AI capabilities.
Notably, in 2023, researchers from AI Singapore unveiled an open-source large language model named Southeast Asian Languages in One Network, or Sea-Lion, which received S$70 million in funding. This model has already been adopted by various companies, including Indonesia’s GoTo. An updated version of the model was released in October 2025, building on the Qwen foundation model developed by China’s Alibaba. This iteration incorporated enhancements in languages such as Burmese, Filipino, Indonesian, Malay, Tamil, Thai, and Vietnamese.
With the substantial financial commitment towards AI research and development, Singapore is positioning itself as a leader in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence. The government’s proactive approach not only aims to improve local capabilities but also to establish the nation as a competitive player in the global market.
As the landscape of AI continues to evolve, Singapore’s initiatives reflect a broader trend among nations investing in AI to ensure they remain at the forefront of technological advancements.
