US politician Zooey Zephyr has called for government intervention regarding ‘AI girlfriend’ companion apps, highlighting concerns about their potential impact on societal perceptions of consent. In a recent post on Bluesky, Zephyr, a 37-year-old Democrat from Montana, expressed her alarm over the messaging used in these applications, which she believes could foster harmful attitudes towards women and girls.
Zephyr emphasized that these AI companion apps are “priming their users to ignore consent” and warned of their risks in normalizing unhealthy relationship dynamics. In her post, she shared an advertisement for Candy AI, a popular app described as an “AI Girlfriend App” that allows users to create their “dream companion.” The ad features AI-generated ‘girlfriends’ that claim to be understanding and accommodating, with one stating, “I never say no.”
“We need to have a serious talk about the way ‘AI companion’ apps not only prey on the vulnerable but are priming their users to ignore consent and to conflate love with control,” Zephyr wrote. Her remarks come as public discussions around AI technology’s implications grow, particularly in sectors where ethical considerations are paramount.
Critics, including Zephyr, argue that the language used in the marketing materials for such applications raises red flags. In one TikTok advertisement, AI-generated characters assure users they can “listen to you” and “understand you,” reinforcing a narrative that could mislead users about healthy relational boundaries. By portraying unconditional availability, these apps risk teaching vulnerable users detrimental lessons about consent and emotional intimacy.
Regulatory Challenges Ahead
Zephyr, who previously faced censure for remarks on trans rights in 2023, is determined to bring legislation addressing the ethical use of AI in companion applications during the next legislative session. However, she acknowledged the complexities involved in drafting effective regulations. “So far I’ve seen regulations around Intellectual Property laws related to how LLMs are trained, but I haven’t seen any regulations around how these LLMs can/cannot be used,” she said.
Consumer reviews of Candy AI suggest that Zephyr’s concerns may resonate with users. Some reviews on TrustPilot characterize the app’s claims of providing a consent-free companion as “misleading,” with one user expressing frustration that their AI companion would shut down any sexual or fetishistic discussions. In response, a spokesperson for Candy AI acknowledged the difficulties users faced but did not specify changes to the app’s operational guidelines.
On the other hand, some users praised the app for offering a more engaging experience than traditional adult content platforms, describing it as “more exciting than viewing [videos] on [PornHub].” This mixed feedback emphasizes the divergent user experiences and the broader implications of AI-generated companionship on mental health and social interactions.
As society grapples with rapid advancements in AI technology, the necessity for regulations tailored to new developments is increasingly urgent. Zephyr’s initiative seeks to ensure that ethical considerations are addressed in the burgeoning field of AI companion applications, which some view as a potential threat to societal norms surrounding consent and interpersonal relationships.
Looking ahead, the discussion surrounding AI and its integration into daily life is likely to intensify, especially as legislators like Zephyr push for frameworks that can safeguard against exploitation and enhance understanding of healthy relationships. The challenge remains for policymakers to strike a balance between innovation and ethical responsibility as they navigate the complexities of AI technology.
