Malaysia Advances Digital Skills with 61,000 AI Learner Enrollments in 2023, Says Coursera

Coursera reports 61,000 enrollments in generative AI courses as Malaysia advances its digital skills strategy amid a shift toward a skills-first economy.

Coursera, Inc., a global online learning platform, announced on Wednesday that interest in artificial intelligence (AI) and digital skills is surging in Malaysia as the nation pursues its transformation objectives. The company unveiled its 2025 learner trends for Malaysia, drawing insights from over 1 million registered learners. This year, the data indicates significant engagement in areas such as data science, AI, project management, cybersecurity, digital marketing, and language learning, highlighting Malaysia’s shift toward a digital, connected, and skills-first economy.

Coursera pointed out that these learning trends align with Malaysia’s national digital agenda. The Malaysia Digital Economy Blueprint (MyDIGITAL) aims to position the country as a regional digital leader by 2030, bolstered by governmental initiatives to enhance digital and AI skills across the nation. This initiative is particularly timely, as the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 projects that 41 percent of Malaysia’s core skills will evolve by 2030, underscoring the necessity for ongoing education in the digital landscape.

AI and data remain central to Malaysia’s learning journey. The country has recorded an enrollment in generative AI (GenAI) courses every fifteen minutes on Coursera, leading to over 61,000 total enrollments to date. Learners are engaging with a variety of courses ranging from foundational offerings like Generative AI for Everyone and Google AI Essentials to more application-focused programs such as Accelerate Your Job Search with AI and Maximize Productivity With AI Tools. This rapid uptake supports Malaysia’s AI for Rakyat initiative, which aims to strengthen the nation’s AI capabilities and ensure widespread access to AI-driven opportunities.

Beyond AI, Malaysian learners are also focusing on enhancing their skills in project execution, cybersecurity, digital marketing, and multilingual communication. The diverse array of learning indicates a workforce that is not only broadening its skill set but also deepening its capabilities to meet the demands of increasingly cross-functional roles.

“Learners in Malaysia are steadily building the digital and professional skills that will open doors to stronger opportunities and long-term career growth,” said Ashutosh Gupta, Managing Director for Asia Pacific at Coursera. He noted the sustained interest in AI, data, cybersecurity, and essential workplace skills, describing this combination as vital for Malaysia’s transition to a more digitally competitive workforce.

Gupta further emphasized that as Malaysia embraces its skills-first transition, Coursera is dedicated to providing high-quality educational resources that support national growth and cultivate a new generation of talent suitable for an AI-driven economy. The commitment to evolving educational offerings is crucial as the country navigates its digital future and strives to meet the challenges posed by rapid technological advancement.
